What can be done to reduce the polarization in American politics? What will happen if the polarization continues and increases?

Real political polarization is what happened in Germany in the 1920's following the end of the War when there were riots in the streets and armed militias from either side takeing whole cities by force...
Whats going on is no different than what has gone on in the past...it's just another time of vocal differences on a few key issues but it's not gonna lead us into some sort of revolution on it's own. Something else will have to happen before something really bad happens.
The politicians, on the whole, are still elitists who smoke cigars and drink brandy together regardless of what side of the aisle they come from.

First... ban sunglasses and especially Poloroids.

Second... Equip every TV with a BS-Chip, which is similar to a "V-Chip", but far, far more useful.

Third... Shoot every politician that spends more than %50 of their advertisements flaming their opponents.

Fourth... Sink the Swift Boat Veterans.

I would first start with disbanding the rpublican and democratic organization.

Then, I would form two new political parties, based on logical decisions rather than polarization.

However, I do want to maintain at least 2 somewhat dominant political parties, that way if someone in one party messes up, the other party can cry foul. Checks and balances.

I think Americans must start supporting a third party in a serious manner.

We have become so polarized that support for a young third party at this time is seen as useless.

I concur!

Saw11_2000 mentioned checks and balances...if we had a viable third party, that would be a good first step. It would be unlikely any 2 parties would agree on every issue, so there would be shifting alliances. The 3 parties would have to work together to get important legislation passed. With 2 parties, who ever has the numbers runs rough-shod over the other.

And remind Bushtard that he's the President...not the Pope. (It's about separation of church and state, dude.)

In my opinon politics today are spliting even christians into groups and this is very sad. I had someone tell me because I was a democrate I was not moral and therefore a christian in name only. I felt like I had been physicaly attacked why should I have to defend my christian values just because I happen to be a Dem. ?

I'm with you Linwood. The only way to stop the polarization is to stop having politics being a binary choice. As long as it's D/R, it'll just keep getting worse :(.

EDIT:

If it were possible to allow a popular third party into the Presidential debates, it would help a lot, but there's no hope of that. The two major parties would stonewall that.

COMMUNICATE!!! We have crossed over into a place where people actually don't like each other because they don't agree on an issue. They don't talk and don't communicate and therefore have no other interaction than their argument over a certain issue. What they need to do is subscribe to a forum where other ideas and thoughts are offered and that way they can realize that just because someone doesn't hold the same opinion as you, doesn't make them bad, it doesn't make evil, it doesn't make them wrong, it just makes them different. And what makes us different is what makes us great!!!:)

I guess what I am saying is...everyone should be a member of RF!!!!:D

I don't live in America so my picture of what it's like over there is rather incomplete.

What I think is that demonization is the norm, to an extent it is everywhere, and it helps no-one.

It seems Americans use certain terms to discredit ideas before the can be explored. 'Socialized' medicine is one I've heard. 'Whiny Liberals', 'Unpatriotic' etc etc.

Yes, they are mysteriously united against a third party, or heaven forbid a fourth party.
If you hear what those third party's representative's have to say (Even Nader!!) , and could question in the present administrations foreign and domestic policy's during a debate, they wouldn't get away with the average load of bovine secretion they are presenting during the screened debates we had to endure.

Its easy to say the social security is broken, It is harder to have a third party canditate tell the American public that the 2 major parties looted it in the good times. (IIRC)

Sadly, this sort of unity between the Dems and the Reps is exactly what we should expect. Both parties have as their purpose to secure the most power for themselves, and serving the people's wishes only a means to that power when they do it. For that reason, they normally seek to destroy each other. However in this case, their interests coincide. If a third party entered the political arena with any degree of force, they both lose power. So they both act in their common interest :(
