The U.S. was founded..

The Devil's Advocate
This was the whole point of fleeing to this country to escape religious persecution.
then in that case shouldnt we be talking about the pilgrim fathers , did the founding fathers flee or were they already there?
The story about the Pilgrims fleeing Europe to escape religious persecution is a myth. The Pilgrims left because they didn't think the Reformation went far enough in England - it was still "too Catholic" for their tastes. And they came to the "New World" with the intent of building a new Zion. They saw themselves as the new Jews, the new Chosen People (and the Native Americans were the Caananites). It's quite clear that they did not come for the ideal of religious freedom, because they themselves persecuted people who believed differently from them.

Seven out of the original 13 colonies had established religions. The colonies were NOT founded upon the ideal of religious freedom. But our country was, because of the foresight of a few men.

Thank you for putting it so plainly out there.

The founders, i.e. the founders of the Constitution were men who had extensive knowledge of the enlightenment thinkers of Europe (such as Kant, Rousseau, Hume, Voltaire, Montesquieu & Locke) and the Greek/Roman Philosophy that had been re-discovered in the Renaissance and periods ever since. America is founded on certain philosophical and political ideas that allow for citizens to be believers/unbelievers, but to never allow one group to deny another group their constitutional rights.

I was under the impression that the founding fathers were for the most part deists, but saw it fit to allow religious freedom as a fundamental right. The US has no state religion, or base religion in it's founding.
