The RIGHT to defend pedophilia? IT'S ILLEGAL!!!

They weren't defending pedophilia, they were defending pedophiles rights to speak. Big difference.

I see you ignored my post and 9-10ths Penguin's post as well. You don't like that the ACLU has defended many Christians I take it?

Smoke

Done here.
Well I tell you what. I'm going to form an organization where I like to film babies being defiled by animals. Thank God I have the ACLU to defend my right to have such an immoral and absolutely absurd organization. People have a RIGHT to an attorney for murder or rape. There are always two sides to a story. Their guilt is in doubt. NAMBLA is already guilty. Child porn and molestation is ILLEGAL. But apparently the ACLU doesn't think the pedophiles have gotten a fair say.
Apart from the fact that you defend an organization that has been guilty of thousands of cases of child abuse, you also misrepresent a good and decent organization that has had nothing at all to do with child abuse.

And I don't know where you're getting your information, but the ACLU has never defended child pornography or NAMBLA's right to publish child pornography. The ACLU does not challenge the state's right to legislate age of consent laws, either. The ACLU represented NAMBLA in a wrongful death suit filed by the parents of Jeffrey Curley, a ten year old boy who was raped and murdered by pedophiles. None of the individual NAMBLA members who were sued by the Curleys had anything to do with the rape and murder. As far as I know, the Curleys never showed that the murderers were members of NAMBLA. The ACLU's position is that NAMBLA's publications -- which the ACLU describes as "vile" -- don't make NAMBLA or its individual members responsible for the rape and murder of Jeffrey Curley. That's it. That's the entire extent of the ACLU's involvement.

Compare that to your church's decades-long obstruction of the law, collusion with child rapists, protection of child rapists, and facilitation of child rape.

Thank you Bill for the actual information on this. I admit I didn't know all that either, but I knew darn well that the ACLU wouldn't go around defending pedophilia. Rheff is really reaching here.

Are you saying that it should not be allowed to advocate that the law be changed? Or that a criminal statute is unconstitutional? Do you know anything about how our legal system works?

Now, again, why should a criminal organization responsible for not only actually molesting thousands of children, but then protecting, defending and covering up their crimes for decades, be entitled to tax exemption?

Because there are 76.9 million Catholics in the US, and we vote.

So, it's ok, for it to be in favor of Communism, ok, for them to be anti-christian, alright for them to oppose national security, no problem that they defended the P.L.O. and Quadafi, no problem they supporte child porn and child molestors and that they are perverting the Constitution. I can see how an organization like that deserves your respect. Maybe they do, if you believe in the same things they stand for.
Actually, the ACLU has fought for even Christians to retain there rights. Personally, I wouldn't fight for a group that demonizes my group and tries to stop them at ever turn, but, I guess that's what makes the ACLU such a great group. I'm sure if it wasn't for the ACLU and similiar groups, we probably couldn't even be debating this right now.

you're great group has also stated that having sex in a public restroom is an act of privacy and thus it is protected under the constitution. Man, I thought a PUBLIC restroom was the complete opposite of privacy. I could be wrong though. This is just one instance of a rediculous case the ACLU has defended. More to come.

Arrgh.

The ACLU supports free speech in all its forms, whether it's street preachers, Gay Pride parade protestors or activism by NAMBLA.

The ACLU supports freedom of religion in all its forms, whether it's pagan symbols on headstones in veteran cemeteries, or the right for a Catholic to partake of communion wine in a correction centre where alcohol isn't allowed.

The cases they defend and file briefs on are about the rights themselves, not the people involved. The fundamental idea of the ACLU is that all people should be free to act, believe and speak, subject only to very specific legal bounds (i.e. the Constitution). They involve themselves in cases regardless of the distastefulness of the defendants because they believe that the status of people's rights should not depend on how offended others are at their actions, as long as those actions are legal.

And frankly, you should tread carefully before you condemn those who protect the rights of things you don't agree with, because there are likely a number of things that you support (just like any of us) that many people would find objectionable or distasteful.

For example, think of all the counties in the United States named "Orange" or "Ulster" - they're scattered all over the country, so there may be one or two near where you are. It hasn't been that long since in these areas (and in some cases, whole states), founded and settled by Protestants, the majority of people would have found your own religion offensive to the point where a large number of people considered the Pope to be the Antichrist. It was only the protection of the law, along with people who believed that personal offense is not a proper reason to abrogate a human right, that protected Catholics and their freedom to practice and believe as they saw fit in these places.

So the ACLU defends the right of pedophiles to petition the government to change the law, despite the offense you take to it? Remember that they also defend the right of people to protest same-sex marriage and abortion, despite the offense that I and a great many other people take to that. It's about the right, not the defendant.

Reportedly, these lawsuits affected thirty states.

$110,000 = Multnomah County (Oregon)

And it's not about the defendant if anyone is able to screw in a public restroom. The last thing I want my daughter to hear is someone doing it in a bathroom stall.

And the last thing I would want any child of mine to see is the posters of aborted fetuses that a group from my local Catholic church likes to hold up on the roadside, but we don't all get what we want, do we? It's funny how people think that the legal right to do something entitles them to do it.

But you don't think people have a right to privacy in a bathroom? If you're in the stall, look up, and see someone watching you, you don't mind?

When someone does something illegal, the people suing them generally get to recover their court costs.

In all these cases, governments and/or public employees were found by a court of law to be acting illegally and unconstitutionally. If you've got a problem with the ACLU getting this money, I'd suggest you take the matter up with your elected officials, and politely ask them to make sure that they and their staff don't break the law.

That's absurd. Abortion is a different animal. People doing the mattress mombo in a PUBLIC restroom are not entitled to that kind of privacy.

Yes - those posters are deliberately intended to shock and offend as many people as possible. Two people in a bathroom stall are trying to avoid public notice, not encourage it.

People doing the mattress mombo in a PUBLIC restroom are not entitled to that kind of privacy.
The laws of the United States and a court of competent jurisdiction disagree with you, apparently.

The above argument will self-destruct in 5 seconds.........

The ACLU is not the only legal organization that is awarded attorney's fees when the state is contested. Coral Ridge Ministries just has an axe to grind with an organization that disagrees with it's own evangelical agenda.
