Charged at by a Few Stray Dogs, Bitten by One

I was on my way to meet a friend, and I was walking through a dark street. This city has a major problem of stray dogs and cats, since there's virtually no animal control to speak of. Like many other parts of the city, that street had many stray dogs, and four of them were consistently chasing and barking at every car that passed through the street.

I stepped aside fairly quickly to evade one of the incoming cars, and one of the dogs apparently thought I was trying to run and bit me in the hip twice. The other three were barking at me, which made the possibility of a mauling flash through my mind. I stretched my arms to make myself look bigger, slammed the ground as hard as I could, and loudly shooed the dogs off. The one that had my hip let go and backed away, and the rest followed suit.

I later read that slamming the ground could be taken by a dog as a challenge, which could either go really well or really badly. Thankfully, in this case, it worked in my favor. I had only read about reacting to dog attacks out of curiosity, but the information turned out to be immensely helpful when all of that happened. Given how scared I was of a potential mauling, I would have almost certainly followed my base instincts and run as fast as I could if I hadn't known that doing so would have triggered an even more aggressive reaction from the dogs.

I rushed to a hospital and got rabies and tetanus shots. The rabies vaccine needs to be administered in five shots over 28 days, but the tetanus shot was a one-off. The latter hurt so much that my arm had a reduced range of motion for a couple of days, but the pain has mostly subsided now, and the peace of mind and protection are certainly worth it for me.

Long story short: I was charged at by four dogs and bitten by one, and I have since had multiple shots. If I hadn't randomly read about reacting to dog attacks a few years ago, I would have probably tried to run and gotten mauled. I'm glad this didn't go much worse than it did.

How are you doing now?

I'm okay! Just dealing with soreness in both arms from the shots I've had so far and also with soreness in my hip. I'm resting and taking things easy for now; walking causes mild discomfort that builds up to enough pain to cause a limp if I walk too much.

Hope it all heals up quickly for you.

You were lucky, your knowledge saved you from much worse.
When did it happen?
How many more rabies shots must you have?
Hoping your wounds heal quickly.

I hope that you heal up soon. Can you by "bear spray" were you live right now? Dogs should be very susceptible to it. Dogs have a very sensitive olfactory system and that is where bear spray strikes. I had to check, and yes it works, though any pepper spray probably would. When it comes to a pack of dogs I would want something more than just a teeny tiny cannister designed to stop a single human.

So glad you are alright, DS! Dogs can be fierce and it's no joke.

Glad you got your shots and are being well-looked after by your hospital!!

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Wow, I am so, so glad you're doing OK after that very scary incident!

OK, TRUE STORY TIME:

When I was a little kid, we lived in Japan, and they were having a rabies scare. Long story short, I got bitten by a cat and we couldn't find it, so off I went to the doctor. Back in the day, it was ONE SHOT PER DAY IN THE STOMACH, for I think 28 days in a row. Not fun.

I have always heard that if you lunge toward a dog and yell at him or her, he or she will back off. I don't know if that's universally true but it has worked for me.

I once had to move a large engine down in Florida
at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum. Wild dogs
ran around & thru it when I worked at night.
Shining a flashlight out into the distance, I could
see many eyes facing me. None ever approached.
This went on for a week.
I once really frightened one when it came around
a corner & saw me. I knew to not run from them.
Individually they're cowards. In a pack they're brave.

As far as I know, it would be quite difficult to buy pepper spray here, and even if you did, you could get in trouble if law enforcement found it on you.

It would have definitely been helpful in the situation I was in, though.

@Debater Slayer....
What weapons are you allowed where you live?

Nothing that I know of. Carrying blades could easily get you jailed, and pepper spray and tasers could get you in trouble too.

Guns are simply off the table for the vast majority of people here. Licensing one is significantly difficult and includes a lot of criteria that the average citizen wouldn't meet.

Yeah, I've heard about the older shots, and they sound excruciating. I'm so glad the vaccine is so much easier to take nowadays.

Trying to look and act intimidating worked for me as well, but like you, I don't know whether it works universally. I'm just grateful it did in my case. :D
