I'm assuming most of us here went to school as a kid. Whether it was public, private, home(or a mix), most places require some kind of education for children.

What was your experience with it? Positive, negative, both? Did you feel it was good quality, or did you learn more through other means?

If you're a parent, what was your opinion of the education your child received?

If you were/are a teacher, what is/was your opinion on education as it is(or was when you were teaching)?

For the purposes of this thread, I'm only interested in personal experiences and opinions regarding childhood education(as opposed to college education), and not what should/could be done about the education system.

Ouch.

At junior (7 to 11 years) and senior (11 to 16) school i was considered uneducable and thought of as thick (apparently a technical term). Bjt i was very good at rugby ;-)

When i was 14 my eye problem was diagnosed, i was prescribed eye glasses to filter out red and voila, i could make out letters and words.

With the help of those same teachers i taught myself to read and write, not well but well enough to pass a handful of exams that allowed me to enter college so here the story stops ;-

What lead to your eye problem being discovered?

After 4th grade, I mostly hated it all the way to 12th grade. But in retrospect, I do wish I had done better, and I could have easily, if I paid attention more and hung around with a better group

Mostly good in Elementary School, not so good in Middle school, changed to private in High school and it was great

I'm not a teacher

If you had been able to do better, do you think it would have improved your overall life as an adult?

What was the private school like?

It was considered to be dyslexia and untreatable. A different specialist asked if she could examine my eyes and discovered an abnormality in my cones so too much red and not enough green and blue got through to my brain. Paper and most inks contain a mix of colours to get the required colour, including red so words looked similar to this. Green lenses filter out the red.

I went to the same private school from 3 yrs to end of 12 th grade (19 yrs). It was good on education but poor in sport and other extra curricular facilities....lacking much of a school ground to speak of. At that time though school was not a whole day thing. It was 3 hours in the elementary level and 4.5-5 hours in high school. Most of my playing and homework practice etc happened at home only. Nowadays India too has shifted to all day staying facility for kids as most parents are our working and no adult is at home to look after kids. Economics, but do not think it's a good thing.

Couldn't tell you for sure, it didn't happen. It would have likely made me get college done faster, might have kept the whole biker part of my life from happening, might not have been an auto mechanic, really cannot say

It was a positive experience for her, unlike middle school which was plain awful. I think it set her up much better for dealing with college. Other that all I can say was it was expensive

You don't read many threads do you. ;)

I loved school, thought it was triff. But then I was a brainy swot that was also good at sports. :relaxed:

I'm now a TA in a high school. Things have changed a bit (obviously) but it seems to me to be a good school (it is over-subscribed ie more parents want their children here than there are places for).

So terrible that I was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer in the second grade due to the stress I was under.
Staff wasn't sure if I was struggling, bored, or if it was the bullying causing me to struggle, so they did nothing.
Even before Columbine my mom took me out because she was scared I was going to do something like shoot up the school.
Homeschooling was false history, toxic Christianity and learning to hate myself.
Then I was in public school again for high school. It took watching not even a half episode of 13 Reasons Why to remember why I ****ing hated high school. (however, it is legit one of the top performing schools in Indiana when it comes to academics).

I attended public school in Illinois. It was acceptable, though I was bored with the curriculum. I felt homework was redundant and a waste of time, so I didn't do it. So although I did extremely well on exams, my grades suffered in classes where homework was a part of the grade.

If you're a parent, what was your opinion of the education your child received?
School ratings/rankings were the top priority when selecting a place to live, so my children attended schools with high rankings. What I found disappointing from when I attended school was willingness just to push kids to the next grade level regardless of knowledge. But I really can't complain about either of my kids education. One went on to be accepted at a highly reputable college.

At the first high school I went to I was bullied relentlessly so had to move to another school

Second school I went to was a bit crap but nice, it was an inner-city school and 95% of the pupils there were Pakistani Muslims, which made things interesting

The place I went to to do my A-levels (which you do when you're 16-18) was OK but when I was there I was an avoidant and socio-phobic loner and made zero friends there, in-between lessons I wouldn't go to the common room like everyone else did, I'd hang around in a nearby park all by myself, in all manner of foul weather

But I spent lots of time online in chat-rooms and on ICQ - this was about 25 years ago when people connected to the internet using modems, which made a bizarre cacophony when you connected

Academically I could have done much better at all the schools I attended and probably would have done had they been better!

I can relate to that... I never sat in foul weather, but due to social anxiety, I was usually stuck sitting alone.

We've had children in both English and French schools. Overall i think the french was better. Smaller class sizes so more personal tuition. Initially a higher emphasis on core subjects with creative and imaginative work increasing as the student progresses. France also ensures at leased 1 nature lesson a week where students visit farms, forests, rivers, animal sanctuaries etc. And the lunch times, they are used to teach students how to dine.

I think that a great many people who are now adults are too young to remember that

I think the internet was much better 25 years ago, before "social media"

I miss ICQ

I know it's still going but it's Russian owned and there is no way I would trust Russian software on my computer
