Abraham failed the test.

idea

Question Everything
Convincing explanation Did Abraham pass the test?

Afterwards
- God doesn't speak directly to Abraham again
- the entire family splits apart, no longer living together

Some religious people use Abraham 's story as justification to do things like kill kids - that doing anything God supposedly commands is righteous.

It is not good to kill your kid, or anyone else's kids.

It's not good to follow any supposed command.

If God asked you to kill your kid, would you do it?

If God asked you to kill someone else's kid, would you do it?

Do you view those who kill in gods name as righteous?

I personally have never heard anyone, religious or non-religious, claiming they killed their children because God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, Which of course according to the only account we have of that is the Bible. And it reveals that God never actually wanted Abraham to kill his son, it says he was testing Abraham to see if he would do that. Meaning God would have raised him back to life if the offering was made. In that test, Abraham, proved he Loved his creator more than his son, and also that he trusted God to keep the Covenant promise he made to Abraham, even if that would have been done. And the covenant God made with Abraham was thru Abraham;s Only Son of the promise, his descendents would be more numerous than the sands. This promise is still being fulfilled to this very day!

We Jews actually have a midrash that Abraham failed the test--I heard this in a sermon. He should have argued with God about the morality of sacrificing an innocent human, and neglected to do so. I wish I had the citation for you, but was not able to find it. You will find many Jewish sites that discuss Abraham failing the test.

We do have the account in the Bible and it says:
Genesis 22:6-12
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,

7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

In verse 8
Abraham, because of his faith and trust in God believed somehow God was going to either provide the sacrifice or bring his son back to life even if he made him go thru it.

And in verse 12,

God stops Abraham and then God honors Abraham and says he now sees that Abraham fears him and would not even withhold his Only Son from God.

This the place where God is first called The GOD WHO PROVIDES........Yahweh Jire

Abraham is the Patriarch of all those who have believed in God and his Word since that time. He was declared Righteous by Believing in the Rhema (spoken) Word of God. We too can be declared righteous by believing in God's word Today!

Just asking someone to kill their child is just bat**** insane.

It's just about as mentally screwed up as it gets.

And then there is context:

And he said unto him, I [am] YHWH that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
And he said, Lord YHWH, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
Genesis 15:7-10

Andrea Yates stated .... her sons were developing improperly. She told her jail psychiatrist: "It was the seventh deadly sin. My children weren't righteous. ....they could never be saved. They were doomed to perish in the fires of hell." She killed all 5 of her children to save them.

Abraham was insane. He ruined his family. Pious, not perfect. He didn't argue, didn't weep, he was insane.

An angel comes to Abraham afterwards, not god.

Yes, the article I linked was from Jewish
source.

Abraham's actions led to irreparable rupture with Isaac, Sarah and even God

Abraham proves unwavering in his "piety", not perfect -

I think defying a god for the sake of one's own child shows far more selfless love, bravery, and moral character than murdering one's own child out blind, uncritical obedience.

"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."

Not die for God, die for friends and family.

Better to lay down your own life for your child, better to defy God and go to hell.

A self righteous zealot isn't perfect. Abraham showed he was insane.

Turn the other cheek?
Kids not intentionally killed.

That story illustrates one really mentally sick and messed up mind.

The story, and the people ... there are people who praise Abraham for raising a knife and preparing a fire -

People who worship under a bloody cross, manged pierced body - whose pinnacle is child sacrifice.

It was almost like the abraham story. Putting children up for war trying to do the right thing.

The lesson was willingness to put up the child trying to do what God wanted.

In a civilized world, that dont make sense but I get it.

History repeats. The current wars. People think they are righteous - they aren't "righteous" they pious, prideful, and insane.

Some suggest that the story has been redacted, and Abraham and that Isaac was indeed sacrificed.

I like the version where Isaac and Ishmael bury their dad together, then become friends and a support to one another.... you know, trauma bonded borthers.

... while keeping a very low profile so that no evidence of such a fairy-tale ending shows up in the Torah. Sounds nice.

See Genesis 25:9:
"His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre"
