Anti-Porn petition for those so inclined

idea

Question Everything
I know different people have different viewpoints on this, I didnot put this thread in the debate area - this is just an FYI for anyone out there who might want to sign it, and pass it along to others.

Here is the petition:
Require Porn to be an "Opt In" feature with Internet Service Providers rather than a standard feature.

In its current state, Internet porn seeks out users by email solicitations and massive amounts of free content throughout Internet browser searches. The average person, even children, can type in the word "cat" or "home" or "soup" and instantly be inundated with offensive and disturbing pornographic images. Parents and individuals have to go to great lengths to install Internet filters that often don't weed out all porn. We are asking for greater protection and responsibility from Internet Service providers and our country. We are asking that people who are interested in porn should have to seek it and choose it. They should have to "Opt In" for it by making arrangements to receive it with their Internet Service Provider. Everyone else should be free from it and assumed "Opt Out".
If anyone else finds any good petitions to sign through this site, post them as well!

What exactly is going to be classified as "porn"? "Porn" is too vague a term. I'm against this. People shouldn't have to call their ISP and say "hey, I want to watch porn! Unblock it for me!". Do your own parenting.

Sounds like an interesting option.

Dont care enough about it to have a strict stance, but it sounds like an interesting option indeed.

A lot more teens would start masturbating to breast exam pages and lactation photos online though.

Which should be an interesting new factor for the coming generation (oh dammit...the pun...)

Agreed. Children should not be left unsupervised on the internet, and it won't just be "porn" they'll find either.

Having gone to your linked " an article to consider:" I was amused by this little throw-away at the end of the article.
"Elder Robbins warned listeners of becoming desensitized in their media choices and against passionate kissing."
Passionate kissing? Didn't that old horror disappear when high-button shoes went out of fashion? Pretty much puts his thinking in perspective; antiquated.

But more importantly, going to Google I entered "cat," "home," and "soup" in its search field, and after going to five pages of each word I never came up with a single link to porn, much less being "instantly . . . inundated with offensive and disturbing pornographic images." Me thinks that either the author of the piece went to porn sites so often a porn profile was created in his search engine, OR that he just made it all up.

To be fair, maybe he shares computer with his son...or daughter or wife...

Can't take the thoughts out of people's heads. This is a slippery slope leading to bans on movies, lyrics, sex toys, it's a dangerous road to walk; messing with people's freedom.

This is what happens when hyper-conservative people search the internet - they don't know how to use the computer. Or they started on a porn website. I don't want to know what kind of stuff they got from 'soup' on YouPorn.

I had curiosity just now...

I could tell you, but it wouldn't be too surprising :D

I couldn't find any porn by searching for all the terms together - cat, home, soup. It's a bit sad when people feel the need to lie to convince people to join their cause. This one seemed comically implausible because the outcry would be fantastic against this kind of thing (can you imagine - the Super Bowl a few years ago showing a nipple - and catching your kid finding porn when they just want to see a cat?). Most search engines have taken measures exactly to prevent this from happening, and it seems to be very effective.

Anyway, I find it offensive that the author of the petition is promoting a "righteous" cause while lying through their teeth about something that's common knowledge.

Agreed.

There's FAR, FAR more disturbing things on the internet than images of adults giving pleasure to each other (such as any given comments section on any given Youtube video.) Honestly, the porn itself shouldn't be the target, but the viruses, adware, etc. that often accompany such sites and files which children aren't necessarily going to be wise enough to avoid.

In any case, for those parents who don't have time to monitor their kids' internet activities all the time, there's effective blocking software out there (remember to change the password frequently.)

As for adults, frankly, we should be able to monitor ourselves.

Hey this is funny -

I didn't get any porn when I added "porn" to the search. I did 'cat home soup porn' and all I got was this silly petition. haha
