Salah in Qur'an

Union

Well-Known Member
Salam all . Salah , generally translated as prayer, is probably the most hot topic among the opponents of the Qur'an alone movements . According to them Qur'an didn't detail the Salah , hence without Hadith it is impossible to perform Salah . This argument regards to be one of the strong Combat-kits among Sunni and Shia in the quest of proving the followers of Qur'an only wrong .

But the true fact is , ALLAH (swt), revealed about hundred verses in Qur'an related with Salah , directly or indirectly .These verses cover well enough all the features of Salah from every aspects . In the same time it doesn't match and tally with the Salah practiced traditionally , mainly derived from Hadith .Hence the unsatisfactory stance of the traditionalist .

Whatsoever , this thread is dedicated to discuss the Salah (root : Sad-Lam-Waw :S-L-W) from the Qur'an in details and in order to achieve this purpose we used the root search of S-L-W from the Qur'an which may can swallow a lot of posts but inshALLAH this will be a reference for researchers interested in the subject in this forum and in cyber world . In process , at the end we will summarize the Salah as prescribed by ALLAH (swt) , from the Qur'an inshALLAH .

Thanks for your patience .

It is He Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation); that the Messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witnesses for mankind! So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector - the Best to protect and the Best to help!

Therefore, you shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), and hold fast to GOD; He is your Lord, the best Lord and the best Supporter.

Definition of Salah

ALLAH , the Almighty connoted the salah in Qur’an with a single and simple definition . All the verses related with Salah are perfectly matching with this definition. Please look at the following verse :

[075:031] So he doesn't affirm (Sadaqa) nor did he pray (Salla)!-
[075:032] Rather but lied (Kathaba) and turned away(Tawalla)!

[075:031] Fala saddaqa wala salla
[075:032] Walakin kaththaba watawalla

‏75:31 فلا صدق ولاصلى
75: 32 ولكن كذب وتول

As per the above verse Salla is made as the opposite to turn away. Hence Salah means turn towards . Different synonyms can be used in place of ‘turns towards’ like make contact , remain attached , establish connection etc .

Salah more than a ritual prayer

According to the Qur’an Salah is not only bounded within the ritual prayer activities, as traditionally believed. Rather it has broader sense and practice . The following verses establish without ambiguity , the different functions of Salah .

01. Communication:

a) [033:056] Surely Allah and His angels turns towards (Sallu) the Prophet; O you who believe! Turn towards him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation .

The above verse is talking about the communication between the Prophet with GOD , the Almighty , with angels and the believers . Here S-L-W used in to denote support and help .We found in so many verses in the Qur’an that how ALLAH (swt) and HIS angels helped and support the Prophet in different occasions and persisted contact with Prophet on every folds of his life . The instruction of this supportive communication with the Prophet is made instructive upon the believers. This is more confirmed from the proceeding verses , e.g., 33:57-58 , where ALLAH (swt) cursed and criticized who hurt and oppose/don't support the Prophet and the believers . These verses are used on the contrast of Sallu used in verse 56.

b) [009:103] Take Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it, and turns toward (Salli) them. Verily! Your attention (Salatika) are a source of security for them, and Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower .

The explanation of the above verse is same as mentioned in verse 33.56 . Here Prophet was establishing relation with his followers , which also denotes a positive relation of support , help and bond of community . This verse proves that S-L-W is possible between human .

c) [033:043] He it is Who turns toward (Yusalli) you, and (so do) His angels, that He may bring you forth out of utter darkness into the light; and He is Merciful to the believers.

The above verse is about GOD’s (swt) and angels’ attention and awareness to guide the believers from disbelief to beliefs. This verse discloses another important fact that ALLAH (swt) and HIS angels also perform Salah upon the believers, and not only upon the Prophet Muhammad alone .

d) [003:038] There did Zakariya pray (Dowa) to his Lord, saying: "O my Lord! Grant unto me from Thee a progeny that is pure: for Thou art He that heareth prayer!

[003:039] While he was standing in prayer (Yusalli) in the chamber, the angels called unto him: "God doth give thee glad tidings of Yahya, witnessing the truth of a Word from God, and (be besides) noble, chaste, and a prophet,- of the (goodly) company of the righteous."

The story of Zachariah is another delighted one in this regard . He was asking/imploring/calling (Doa) ALLAH (swt) for a son and the good news of Yahya’s birth came upon him through the angels when he was in state of Salah , meaning when he turned towards the LORD .

02. Religious and trading system:

[011:084] And unto Midian (We sent) their brother Shu'eyb. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other God save Him! And give not short measure and short weight. Lo! I see you well-to-do, and lo! I fear for you the doom of a besetting Day.
[011:085] O my people! Give full measure and full weight in justice, and wrong not people in respect of their goods. And do not evil in the earth, causing corruption.
[011:086] That which Allah leaveth with you is better for you if ye are believers; and I am not a keeper over you.
[011:087] They said: O Shu'eyb! Doth thy way of prayer (Assaltuka) command thee that we should forsake that which our fathers (used to) worship, or that we (should leave off) doing what we will with our own property. Lo! thou art the mild, the guide to right behaviour.

We see from the above set of verses that Prophet Shu’aib was preaching his community with the followings :

- To worship ALLAH (swt) alone.
-To measure full weight and length in business.
-Not to cheat people in trading with them.
-Not to spread corruption in the earth .

In verse 11:87 , the people of Shu’aib’s community defined all those preaching mentioned above as his Salah .They declined to accept such Salah (system) offered by GOD , the Almighty through Prophet Shu’aib .

03. Salah of creatures and objects :

[024:041] Seest thou not that it is God Whose praises all beings in the heavens and on earth do celebrate, and the birds (of the air) with wings outspread? Each one knows its own (mode of) prayer (Salah) and praise(Tasbiha). And God knows well all that they do.

How a creature like bird perform Salah ? What about trees , mountains , sun , moon or stars ? It is quite imprudent to think their Salah to be the ritual prayer like we do . Their Salah is the obedience to ALLAH (swt) , turning towards HIM with submission and obedience .

The verse below explains a bird’s submission , which is its Salah :

[038:019] And the birds assembled; all were turning unto Him.

The Salah of other objects in the earth and heaven is explained as follows :

[022:018] Hast thou not seen that to ALLAH submits whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains and the trees, and the beasts, and many of mankind ? But there are many who become deserving of punishment. And whomsoever ALLAH disgraces, none can raise him to honour. Verily, ALLAH does what HE pleases.

[055:006] And the herbs and the trees - both (alike) bow in adoration.

Dear brother,

Please inform us how can you decide on the number of 'Rak'a' عدد الركعات of the ritual prayer from the Quran alone?

With Respect.
