The prophet peace be upon him and his wives

Hello all,

Number of his wives: 12

He left 10 when he died; khadija bintu khuwaylid ( first wife) and Zaynab bintu khuzayma were already dead.

The names of his wifes:

1-Khadija Bint Khuwaylid
2-Sawda Bint Zam'a
3-Aisha Bint Abu Bakr
4-Hafsa Bint Umar
5-Zaynab Bint Khuzayma
6-Umm Salama Hind Bint Umaya
7-Zaynab Bint Jahsh
8-Juwayria Bint Al Harith
9-Safiya Bint Huyay
10-Umm Habiba Ramla Bint Abi Sufyane
11-Marya Bint Simon the Egyptian
12-Maymouna Bint Al Harith

How many virgins? and how many were married before him?

Only one was virgin, Aisha ra. All the rest were married before him.

Were they arabs?

Yes, except one ; Lady Maria who were from egypt.

Was the polygamy of the prophet because of unlimited sexual desire?

1-The prophet from his childhood to 25 years was single

2- From 25 to 50 he married a women 15 years older than him Khadija ra, who married two men before him and had kids.

3- From 50 to 52 he pbuh didnt get married because he was sad on the death of his beloved.

4- From 52 to 60 the prophet married multiple wives for political, religious and social reasons which we will explain later.

Is it possible then , that his sexual desire suddenly aroused only at 52 years?

Is it possible for someone who loves to get married to stay 25 years in his youth ( The golden phase in regards of sexual desires ) with a non virgin older women who married two men before him, he stays with her without marrying another ?

Then stays 2 years without getting married because of loyalty to her.

Next, he married Lady Sawdda who were 80 years old, she was the first Muslim widow and he pbuh wanted to be an example for his companions, as he didnt start by asking them to marry her but married her himself.

On a side note before continuing ; many prophets before Muhammad peace be upon him had more than one wife ; such as Ibrahim pbuh, David and Salomon peace be upon them. ( This one is directed to christians and Jews)

Lets move now to the political, religious and social reasons behind Muhammad peace be upon him marriages:

First: Transmitting Islam and the call for it , with the most detailed way possible (such as the method of ablution, dealing with wifes manners and so forth ) wich requires people to enter his house to transmit the necessary details for the nation, so Allah azza wajjal wanted the prophet peace be upon him to marry Aisha ra while she was young so she can learn a lot from him, and she lived 42 years after his death teaching Islam to the whole Islamic world . But speaking about the knowledge of Aisha ra is too long ; she was the most knowledgable among the companions about obligations, additional acts and similar ( Fatima says; I may start another thread about her knowledge).

Also, the number of Hadeeths narrated by the wifes of the prophet peace be upon him is about 3000 hadeeths.

Regarding the fact that Aisha ra was young , then in the desertic nature of Madina, girls used to reach puberty very fast , ( Fatima says: An example would be a relative of mine while I live in a kinda balanced atmosphere, she was 10 when she got her menses and if you saw her you would say she has 15 years, ANd I live in Morroco not Saudi Arabia), also it was very common to marry young ladies not only among arabs, but also among Romes and Persians at that time.

Second: Reinforcing the relationship between the companions which leads to the unity of the Islamic nation, so the prophet peace be upon married Aisha ra the daughter of Abu Bakr ra , Hafsa the daughter of Umar ra, gave his two daughters to Uthman Ibn Afan ra, and the third one to Ali ra, May Allah be pleased with them all.

Third: Mercy for widows, since he married three of them ( Ladies Sawda, Umm Salama, and Umm Habiba may Allah be pleased with them)

Forth: The continuity of the Islamic Sharia, since the prophet peace be upon him used to marry them by himself: marrying widows, or mercy for those who converted to Islam when he married Safiya ra after her father converted too , which gave him a good position against the jews who envied him.

Fifth: The wish of Muhammad peace be upon him to reinforce his relations with other countries and tribes when he married Marya from Egypt , and when he married Juwayrya so that her tribe Banu Al Mustaliq convert since they were prisoners in the hands of Muslims and the story is well known.

The above is my translation of an arabic article, I may start later a thread about the knowledge of Aisha may Allah be pleased with her, as long as a thread regarding the mercy of the prophet peace be upon him and his manners toward his wives Inshallah.

Best regards.

PS: Stop laughing at my english, translating is tough
PS2: This is only a brief explanation for the matter , you may try to search the Internet for more informations. Such as this site:

mansions are very large houses, Fatima ;)

the marriages of our Prophet (pbuh) are definitely one of the most complex, misunderstood topics in Islam. i look forward to reading all of your dialogues about this. :)

when he married Juwayrya so that her tribe Banu Al Mustaliq convert since they were prisoners in the hands of Muslims and the story is well known.

why marriage was so necessary when muslims would obey muhammad to release their captives? why muhammad refused juwayriya's request to release?

One of the captives from the skirmish with the Banu Mustaliq was Juwayriya bint al-Harith, who was the daughter of the tribe's chieftain. Upon being enslaved, Juwayriya went to Muhammad requesting that she - as the daughter of the lord of the Mustaliq - be released, however the Prophet refused. Meanwhile her father approached Muhammad with ransom to secure her release, but Muhammed still refused to release her. Muhammad then offered to marry her, and she accepted.[45] When it became known that tribes persons of Mustaliq were kinsmen of the prophet of Islam through marriage, the Muslims began releasing their captives.[46] Thus, Muhammad's marriage resulted in the freedom of nearly one hundred families whom he had recently enslaved.

Please dont rely on Wikipedia for informations, when Juwayryah came to the prophet peace be upon him to help her paying her freedom, he peace be upon him suggested something better on her which was to marry her. Theres no narration as far as I know relating that he refused her request or her fathers request.

Her father came with camels to release his daughter, but before giving them he decided to keep two nice camels ( i.e he regretted bringing them) , so the prophet peace be upon him asked him where are the two other camels? And her father became a Muslim, he said I swear that no one saw taking them away.

why marriage was so necessary when muslims would obey muhammad to release their captives?

I may have said so in another thread out of ignorance, but I realised now that it wasnt the main reason, they just released the captives when they knew they were the relatives of the prophet at that time. The narration goes that Juwayryah was the most blessed women for her tribe as they were all released because of her.

Theres a hadeeth about it which was authenticated by Sheykh AL Albani, so in general it seems like an authentic hadeeth, but Im still looking in the matter.

That is why I asked what , in your own opinion, women would like in paradise? :) ( I mean your answer would be the basement of our discussion)

but that seems pretty vague...
women want different things
why would Sheykh AL Albani leave women out in this hadeeth?

Since Im a Muslim, Ill answer you as a Muslim ,then comparing it with your own standards will be your homework :)

As muslims, we believe that it is in the nature of women Hayya, i.e shyness. Therefore in Quran you'll find Allah telling men about the beautiful women theyll have, but for women you'll only find speech about Jewerlies and their beauties and in hadeeths you'll find speechs about how they can have all they want of jewerlies, clothes she can have anything that make her the most beautiful ever.

Now, ask any women and you'll see how much women love Jewerlies , shoes , clothes ; just see how much time they spend shopping.

The main point, regarding the desire of women for sex, Hadeeths explain how men can have unlimited sexual desire, which by another way would mean that they will be completely fullfilling women needs.

Also the desire of men for women is far greater than the desire of women for men.
As for your quuestion, then no I do not believe they'll have more than a husband , and as a Muslim we may find this idea very repugnant and disgusting.

Finally, its time for you to do your homework :)

Small PS: I hope this discussion wont take us too much out of the subject .

i believe that Jannah will give to both men and women whatever they desire. it is, after all, described as a place where no want or need will be unfulfilled. for each man and woman, this will vary slightly. :)

thank you for that

i find this very depressing... :(

it seems as though women are being robbed of their potential
cut down, dominated, demeaned and subjected to men's ideals of what a women should be and act.
i find this rather repugnant and disgusting.

btw, i hate shopping.
