Actually, the small branches/leaves are green and fuzzy. It's there that the smell is.

Ah.... ok, were the limbs you cut hollow (pithy rather than woody) or were they wood all the way through?

Sumac also spreads via rhizomes under the the ground and will pop up like it has seedlings all around it.

also what color do the leaves turn in the winter/ Sumac turn red and Walnut yellow (unless they don't get enough water and they drop early)

Have you thought of taking a picture, plus a small branch, in to a nursery in your area. I had a flower I couldn't identify. I took just the leaf into a nursery and someone was able to positively identify it within minutes.

Well, I think I can safely say it is a Walnut tree now. A few weeks ago I noticed it the green fruit looking things on it.

I was going to say it was a red bud.But not after seeing those nuts.
