Here is one that the words for this songs come from the fourth century fathers of the Church. Its sung usually as a eucharistic hymn

Words: Liturgy of St. James, 4th Century (???????? ???? ???? ???????); trans lat ed from Greek to Eng lish by Gerard Moultri

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded,
For with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
In the body and the blood;
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way,
As the Light of light descendeth
From the realms of endless day,
That the powers of hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away.

At His feet the six wingèd seraph,
Cherubim with sleepless eye,
Veil their faces to the presence,
As with ceaseless voice they cry:
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High!

We don't have hymns as such, but I chant in our church choir and there are a few chants that stand out. One is the Trisagion which is when we sing 'Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us' (though I much prefer it in Romanian) and another would be the Cherubic Hymn.

*Paul*- your "He Who Would Valiant Be" has got to be nearish the top of my list, as is PHOTOTAKER's Battle Hymn of the republic.

There are few that can carry a candle to "Oh Holy night".. which I adore; much to the cost of my family' sanity...

Frankly, there are too many to mention.

I love Oh Holy night too, it's so moving when sung right.

Oh I saw this years ago on PBS (public tv)! I didn't know about a song but this was a very touching thing, kind of like a real and modern day Romeo and Juliet. The song looks lovely!

I really am not so attracted to the lyrics of most hymns as to the music. I like all the old hymns. Most of the lyrics are a bit modernized in our church.

i really like "when the saints" by sara groves. not quite a song of worship, but beautiful and meaningful.

"open the eyes of my heart" is really beautiful, as is "make my life a prayer to you".

I think this is everyone's testamony

I'm Still HERE- Dorinda Clark Cole

When I look back over my life
and I see all the things God's done for me;
been through dangers, heartache, and trouble,
I thank the Lord, He rescued me.

I could have been dead and gone,
but the Lord he spared my life.
Now I can say, that I'm still here
and it's by the grace of God.

Verse 2:
When I look back over my life
and I see all the things the Lord's brought me through;
been through trials, sickness, and suffering,
I thank the Lord, He's blessed me still.

I could have lost the faith
and I could have fell from His grace;
now I can say, that I'm still here
and it's by the grace of God.

Chorus:
Oh, I'm still here,
I'm still here.
oh, I'm still here.

(I haven't made it this far)
(unless I went through disappointments)
through disappointments,

(The Lord has brought me through),
He's brought me through.

Now I can say, He's brought me all the way,
(through the midst of it all),
(through the midst of it all),

I am still here,
it's by the grace of God.
(repeat as desired)

For all the Saints
The King of Love my Shepherd is
Joyful, Joyful We are Adore Thee
Immortal, Invisible, God only wise
All Souls, O Lord, are thine
Unto Thy Temple, Lord, we come
Abide with Me
Jesus Loves Me
Jesus Loves the Little Children
Must Jesus bear the Cross Alone?
Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel?
Hail to the Lord's Anointed
Go now in Peace
Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen
Follow the Drinking Gourd
Oh Freedom
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Enter, Rejoice and Come in
Wade in the Water
We're Gonna Sit at the Welcome Table
Nuct Dimittis
Shall We Gather at the River
Every Night When the Sun Goes In
I Don' Feel No Ways Tired
Let everything that Hath Breath
I want Jesus to Walk with Me
Precious Lord, take my hand
O Come, you longing, thirsty souls
Will the Circle be unbroken?
Panis Angelicus
Be thou my Vision
Great is thy Faithfulness
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
Hush! Somebody's Callin' my Name
Forward through the Ages
Lift High the Cross
Guide my Feet
He's Got the Whole World in His Hands
His Eye is on the Sparrow
We Shall Overcome
For the Beauty of the Earth
Holy, Holy, Holy
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
Tis a Gift to be Simple
We'll Build a Land
Bring Many Names
God be with you til we meet again
Take, O take me as I am

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
It may not appear to be a song of worship but I've heard it performed at both Mosques and Churches. It's about Bosko Brkic, an Orthodox Christian, and Admira Ismic, a Muslim. They were highschool sweethearts killed during the war in Sarajevo.

The Sarajevo Tango

Somewhere in the East, where freezing winter winds blow
Behind a city wall, they call it Sarajevo

Two lovers wait together before the dawn, behind that city wall
Trapped within the bedlam, this man and woman stand

A Christian boy, a Muslim girl, hiding in the shadows there
He whispers as he caresses her hair

Close your eyes, my darling, dream of days with brighter suns
Where hate will never find us

Close your eyes, my darling, see the sand of distant shores
Where death is far behind us

Close your eyes, my darling, and all the world will disappear
And all your fears will follow

Close your eyes, sweet angel, we'll go on for evermore
And be far away tomorrow

Wait for the night to meet the day, for the light to show our way
For the light of chance to shine on us

Wait till snipers clean their guns, or smile and turn away
Or dream of their own children

Wait for the right moment to come, run like you've never run
Run like the hounds of hell are upon you

Wait, are you afraid?
Well so am I

Take my hand and we'll fly towards some better day

Go now, run, take my hand
We'll go on for evermore
Where hate will never find us

Go now, run, see the sand
Feel the warming of the sun
Where death is far behind us

Somewhere in the East, where warm summer winds blow
Beyond a city wall, they call it Sarajevo

Two lovers lie together in the mud

What a sad, beautiful song.

Here is my all time favorite hymn, from the 12th century:

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
In ancient times did'st give the Law,
In cloud, and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

1. Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

2. Sorrowing I shall be in spirit,
Till released from flesh and sin,
Yet from what I do inherit,
Here Thy praises I'll begin;
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.

3. Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood;
How His kindness yet pursues me
Mortal tongue can never tell,
Clothed in flesh, till death shall loose me
I cannot proclaim it well.

4. O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

5. O that day when freed from sinning,
I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in blood washed linen
How I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace;
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry,
Take my ransomed soul away;
Send thine angels now to carry
Me to realms of endless day.

Tell the World (of His Love)

For God so loved the world
He gave us Him only Son
Jesus Christ our Savior
His most precious one
He has sent us His message of love
And sends those who hear
To bring the message to everyone
In a voice loud and clear
Let us tell the world of His love
The greatest love the world has known
Search the world for those who have walked
Astray and lead them home
Fill the world's darkest corners
With His light from up above
Walk every step, Every mile, Every road
And tell the world, Tell the world of His love

Our Lord our savior our king
Emmanuel prince of peace
Begotten of the Father's love
Born to set us free
Let heaven and earth sing His phrases
His righteousness proclaim
Let every heart rejoice in His love
And magnify His name

Let us tell the world of His love
The greatest love the world has known
Search the world for those who have walked
Astray and lead them home
Fill the world's darkest corners
With His light from up above
Walk every step, Every mile, Every road
And tell the world, Tell the world of His love

Let us tell the world of His love
The greatest love the world has known
Search the world for those who have walked
Astray and lead them home
Fill the world's darkest corners
With His light from up above
Walk every step, Every mile, Every road
And tell the world, Tell the world of His love
Tell the world of His love

YouTube - A Child's Prayer

Heavenly Father, are You really there,
And do You hear and answer every child's prayer?
Some say that Heaven is far away,
But I feel it close around me as I pray.

Heavenly Father, I remember now
Something that Jesus told disciples long ago:
'Suffer the children to come to me.'
Father, in prayer I'm coming now to Thee.

I heard this song last night at a Catholic group called Loretto that incorporates some Charismatic (not the rolling-on-the-floor-spirit-slaying-frothing-at-the-mouth-speaking-in-tongues types, but the singing hymns and raising their hands and voices to the Holy Spirit type) worship with Catholic teaching. Very moving.

Jesus, komm entzünde uns,
Schenk uns Deinen Geist,
Wir ersehnen Dich.
O Gott, lass uns Deine Zeugen sein,
Wir geben alles für Dich hin.

Translation:
Jesus, come ignite us,
Send us Your Spirit,
We long for You.
O God, let us be Your tools,
We give everything to You.

I Saw the Light
I wandered so aimless life filed with sin
I wouldn't let my dear saviour in
Then jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the lord I saw the light.

Chorus
I saw the light I saw the light
no more darkness no more night
Now Im so happy no sorrow in night
Praise the lord I saw the light.

Just like a blind man I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight
Praise the lord I saw the light.

Chorus

I was a fool to wander and astray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the lord I saw the light.

Verse:
Peace be still, You are near
There's nowhere we can go
That You won't shine redemption's light
Our guilt withdrawn

Pre-Chorus:
As you rise, we come alive
The grave has lost, the old is gone

Chorus:
And You're making all things new
You are making all things new
You are making all things new
And we are free

Verse 2:
Hope is found, You are here
Our hearts forever sealed
By this love that came for us
Now we are Yours

(Chorus)

Bridge:
Your love never ending
Your grace never failing
Redemption is calling us home (repeat)

(Chorus) (repeat)

Only a Sinner
Words by: James Martin Gray
Music by: Daniel Brink Towner

Naught have I gotten but what I received;
Grace hath bestowed it since I have believed;
Boasting excluded, pride I abase;
I’m only a sinner, saved by grace!

(Refrain)
Only a sinner, saved by grace!
Only a sinner, saved by grace!
This is my story, to God be the glory—
I’m only a sinner, saved by grace!

Once I was foolish, and sin ruled my heart,
Causing my footsteps from God to depart;
Jesus hath found me, happy my case;
I now am a sinner, saved by grace!

(Refrain)

Tears unavailing, no merit had I;
Mercy had saved me, or else I must die;
Sin had alarmed me fearing God’s face;
But now I’m a sinner saved by grace!

(Refrain)

Suffer a sinner whose heart overflows,
Loving his Savior to tell what he knows;
Once more to tell it would I embrace—
I’m only a sinner saved by grace!

(Refrain)
