Neurotic priests scare me, says Pope

Vatican City (AFP) - Pope Francis on Friday described some Catholic priests as so scary and neurotic he keeps well away from them.

In comments that had his audience chuckling at a conference on training for the priesthood, the 78-year-old pontiff revealed he is instinctively suspicious of overly pious candidates.

"I will tell you sincerely, I'm scared of rigid priests," he said. "I keep away from them. They bite!"

Francis resorted to humour to make a serious point that some people that are drawn to a clerical career are fundamentally unstable -- and that inevitably creates problems for the church if they are not weeded out.

"If you are sick, if you are neurotic, go and see a doctor, spiritual or physical," he added. "The doctor will give you pills. But, please, don't let the faithful pay for neurotic priests."

As well as assessing the spiritual state of candidates, seminaries should also seek to judge their physical and psychological condition, Francis argued.

"There are often young men who are psychologically unstable without knowing it and who look for strong structures to support them. For some it is the police or the army but for others it is the clergy," the pope added, warning that such disorders inevitably resurface at a later date.

"When a youngster is too rigid, too fundamentalist, I don't feel confident (about him). Behind it there is something he himself does not understand. Keep your eyes open!"

Improved selection and training of priests is a priority for the Church in the wake of the huge clerical sex abuse scandals which highlighted how easy it was for totally unsuitable candidates to be ordained.

i cannot wait to see his reaction to when he gets judged by rigid angels and all the children who his workmates have abused.

Judgment Day is going to be so much fun.:D

How Christian of you. Judge not be damned; burn sinner, burn!
Now go and say that to all the children (who are now adults) who the church has abused.

i will just sit back, watch and laugh as Justice is dished out from the persecuted to the evil doers and supporters of child abuse.

Universal Karma always comes back to bite the attackers.

Don't you think it says something that we're impressed that the Pope isn't a complete idiot and acknowledges the harms of extremism?

The fact that priests were abusing children, and that the Church simply did not deal with the issue was horrendous. However to argue that the Church as an organisation was abusing children is just anti-Catholic slander.

I'd advise you read the words of Christ a little more carefully. He did say a thing or two about the sanctimonious. Be sure there's no beam in your own eye before screaming hellfire judgements at others.

It does seem like this shouldn't exactly be breaking news, should it? o_O Nevertheless coming from an the Pope as the head of an institution historically known for its authoritarianism and abuse scandals I suppose it is good news.

Yet the Catholic Church has not done anything to imprison the evil doers. No catholics world wide have done a mass demonstration against the abusing clergy.

The silence is deafening.

Jesus said 'treat others the way you wish to be treated'. So naturally all abusing clergy will enter sheol and be abused by evil jinn just like they abused children. Payback.

Oh i as a daemon already have my left foot (up to my Achilles Heal) in the Lake of Fire. However at least in this mortal host body my hands are squeky clean and will be judged for at least speaking the truth to the world.

Judgment Day is coming where every sinner will pay with their spirits if they do not repent now. What are the Catholics doing ? Giving the world a Wall of Silence and brushing the truth under a carpet.

After witnessing all four hells i can judge because the Lord has shown me where all types of negative entities will be going on Judgment Day for their crimes against humanity.

This isn't the only impressive thing he has said though. It's impressive that he, the Pope, said it isn't the churches place to judge homosexuals, and it is very impressive that he said atheists can go to Heaven (he probably would have been excommunicated and burned as a heretic in past centuries over that one), it's impressive that he is taking up the cause of the environment, it is impressive that he is speaking against capitalism and trickle-down economics - really the only not-so-impressive things I've noticed so far is he has rambled about demonic possession and exorcisms and his approach towards gender and gender dysphoria.

Fair enough, I just hadn't realized the bar was set so low for common sense and human decency to be considered noteworthy.

He didn't. You need a little understanding of Catholic theology to understand what he actually said there. That is, those who fail to enter the Church though no fault of their own aren't necessarily damned, this can include atheists. But the Church nonetheless still teaches that those who have consciously and culpably chosen to reject Christianity and the Church will not be saved.

Francis went a bit further than that. He is changing how many lay Catholics view atheists, which for some has tended to be in confrontational terms (i.e. "scary" secularists out to destroy faith). In a papal address on 20 March 2013, he described his feelings about agnostics and atheists, again positively, by describing them as "our valued allies":

[W]e also sense our closeness to all those men and women who, although not identifying themselves as followers of any religious tradition, are nonetheless searching for truth, goodness and beauty...They are our valued allies in the commitment to defending human dignity, in building a peaceful coexistence between peoples and in safeguarding and caring for creation.

A scientific advisor for his encyclical on climate change Laudato Si, one of the six people at the press conference promulgating it, was an atheist:

VATICAN CITY — German professor Hans Schellnhuber was one of the most influential scientists advising Pope Francis on his encyclical on the environment Laudato Si (The Care for Our Common Home).

As the founder and director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the climatologist and self-professed atheist was involved from the beginning to the conclusion of Laudato Si and helped to arrange all four meetings on the encyclical, most recently acting as the spokesman of established climate research, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

On Wednesday, the Vatican announced Schellnhuber had been appointed a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
