We spend our lives pursuing people (earthly love) and other earthly (material) things.

Jesus is saying to us, "All I Want is You".

We need to say the same, "All I Want is You (Jesus)" and in return HE will give us the "desires of our heart".

No person or earthly thing can give us what we desire only the Lord can.

Paul is singing as if he were Jesus Christ speaking to us collectively in this video and for himself and ourselves collectively (He switches back and forth). We pursue after earthly things, not realizing that the Lord alone is able to give us what we ultimately desire.

He sings many of his songs in the first, second and third person (including the Lord) which a good song artist always does, giving a greater dimmension to the song.

No, Paul Hewson is a genuine Christian. I did some more research on him and found out he's Catholic.

So as a Catholic he's against birth control too bad for all those poverty stricken countries who will continue to bring children into a world of misery. And is most likely opposed to stem cell research, and abortion.
