I don't know if the Conservatives practice this, but the Orthodox (as I was raised) certainly do. You may find yourself 'discouraged' three times from your path. I despise this practice, a yes should be a yes and an no should be a no, and no Ger should be made to feel unwelcome, ever, for any reason. G-d sets our feet on paths, and to deny or diminish this is a Chillul HaShem (desecration of the Name) IMHO.
