If you have not seen the video can watch it here but be warned it contains nudity, violence and some people may find it disturbing so YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Those that have seen it (please actually watch it before you comment) what did you think? Were youtube right to remove it? Or is it a case of people not actually understanding the actual message of the video?

I don't agree with the removal of it from youtube. It's a good video, did you see the cnn article comparing it to lady gaga

No but how can you compare this to Lady Gaga? One has a valid political message the other is Lady Gaga!

Done here.
I agree that it's disturbing, but I feel very strongly that they should not have removed it.

To some people, provocative is provocative. Depth doesn't matter.

Messages in provocative media are probably some of the most effective ways of getting your point across. It can be used to get people talking about issues that would otherwise remain unheard or are social taboos.

Yes, YouTube became rather heavy handed with copyright and content issues after Google bought them.
Am I the only one who finds the video to be hyperbolic, tongue in cheek and darkly comical? Anyone seen the movie the video copied/plagiarized/made an homage too? Punishment Park I think?

M.I.A. can do no wrong though. :flirt:

Yikes, I can see why YouTube yanked it.

I oppose censorship too, though hyper-violent stuff makes me pause a minute or two before protesting.

I still disagree with any form of censorship so yeah, they were wrong to remove it.

I don't oppose any form of censorship by a private entity. For instance, I prefer that YouTube remove pornography. It's not that I have anything against porn, it's just that I prefer that YouTube not turn into that kind of site. And it's not really censorship if other channels of dissemination exist.

But I don't see any compelling reason to remove this video as opposed to restricting access to it, which YouTube does with lots of videos.

This wasn't a copyright issue though, both the artist and the record company wanted the video on youtube.

Not unless it had an age limit in order to view it.

I don't think this is anything new of youtube. It seems to have double standards as to what is appropriate to view and what isn't. My little niece got on my computer to view kid stuff off of YT and she somehow managed to bring up a video showing graphic videos of mass genocide. I thought it was educational but I don't think my 4 year old niece is old or ready to view it. I think there should've at least been a way to block it regarding age before showing.

I was very nervous and thought, oh crap she's going to start bawling and my sister's going to be coming over asking me what I showed her. But my niece seems eerily mature beyond her 4 years. She asked me what was happening. After I told her in the most simple way I could, she asked me why people would do that. Well I didn't have a good answer for her except that there are people who do cruel things in this world.

The most I can sum up is violence seems more acceptable than nudity. Neither should be removed. I think most of this has to do with our politics. Our media seems more than eiger to put raunchy vidoes and violence in the form of entertainment and yet the war in Iraq is still very vage. You won't see dead bodies of soldiers or the controversies regarding the unacceptable torture that is going on by our own U.S. troops not unless it leaks out.

I say we have the right to know whether it's depicted in entertainment or in the news. As for porn....I think that's another topic in itself. What irks me is when people confuse nudity with pornography.

If you don't have a youtube account you can't see videos that have been flagged, likewise if you have an account and you have registered as under 18 years old. However kids will lie about their ages, and there is sometimes a window between uploading and flagging, which is why kids shouldn't really be left unattended on the internet.

Yea I could totally understand it being flagged on youtube for only over 18s.
