This form of currency is used for leveling up and buying items and is collected after killing an enemy or by consuming certain items. What is the name for this currency that pops into your mind?

There is only one correct answer

Dunno. Never played any game that works like that. Probably because I stay the hell away from games that aren't so much games as scams and money pits disguised as games.

"But for just $39.99 you can buy 7000 fake in-game currency to level up and buy gear in our cash shop! Sure, you can earn that in game but it's a drip feed that'll take you months. You know you wanna buy it, sucker!"
--- modern "gaming" in a nutshell

Or you're talking about that other game. You know, that one that has niche appeal but "everybody" talks about like it's the best thing since sliced bread.

This thread specifically refers to Soulsborne games. Demon Souls, Dark Souls 1 2 and 3, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring

The best kind of games, IMO. Not for the feint of heart or those who are quick to anger

Is it like chess?

Well... it is definitely strategic

It's a video game. A lot of people say that Soulsborne games are hard, but I disagree. They are challenging for sure, but generally they are fair (minus Dark Souls 2). Losing and learning about why you lost so you can overcome the challenge is all part of the game. It can be an infuriating game for people who don't like to lose or for people that lose their patience easily

I've heard that they were good games. Unfortunately I don't have a suitable PC at the moment.

If you do get around to trying them, I recommend using a controller - it's one of the few games where mouse and keyboard can actually hinder your gameplay. I also recommend going into the game with an open mind and with no expectations of conquering everything. It's a harsh game that will punish you for your mistakes. Speaking of which, put points into vigor - more life = getting away with more mistakes

Dark souls is a good entry level game, and it was made back in 2011 so it might run on an older computer. I also hear Elden Ring is a more accessable game if you had a console and wanted to try it on there

I like Elden Ring as you can mod it to make it easier :smirk:

I can't be bothered dying 30 times to rote learn a predictable pattern and master very precise timing to defeat some boss according to a pattern you recognised after 2-3 fights.

5 times I can live with, but much beyond that just gets boring. You still get satisfaction without the time consuming annoyance and need to invest inordinate amounts of time to finish the game.

I find it pretty wanky to make games as inaccessible as possible to casual gamers, a bit like purposely writing a book in impenetrable prose.

Hmmm... I guess it depends on what you want to take away from the game. Soulsborne games are definitely unique in their approach. Sure, they are punishing as hell, but there's no feeling better in a game than when everything clicks in your brain and you are able to defeat an especially difficult boss. It's like a dance where you learn the steps after trial and error - and the adrenaline rush of doing everything perfectly and having it all work out is second to none, IMO

Then there's the invasions. I've played a lot of multiplayer games, but no multiplayer experiences have ever matched these. It's nice when you get too comfortable to have your world shaken up by someone invading your game and making a mess of things, or going into someone else's game and taking their whole experience down a rabbit hole they never saw coming

I love just how unpredictable the whole thing is :D

Death is the greatest teacher in those games.

For anyone who enjoys frequent, epic boss fights… the Souls games are the ideal 3D Metroidvania experience.

Dark Souls opening cinematic

Dark Souls takes you into a dreamlike nightmarish purgatory realm, where everyone in it no matter how strong they are- man or god- will eventually lose their mind and “go hollow”. Your quest is simple… retain your sanity long enough to conquer the monsters around you and spread fire to a world being consumed by darkness… as everyone around you meets tragic ends.

Dark Souls 3 Main Theme

As for Elden Ring, 10/10 in every regard… Miyazaki+ George RR Martin, it’s like Dark Souls combined with Legend of Zelda:

I love the way you described these!

Did you ever have a chance to try Bloodborne?

These days I’m almost exclusively on Xbox when gaming, so I have yet to play Bloodborne and Demon Souls. Though I am about to get started on Sekiro.

Sekiro is the one I havent tried yet. I'm a little apprehensive to try, but I hear it's excellent. The lack of multiplayer does put me off a lil, though

That said, Bloodborne is my absolute favorite of them all. It was one of the main reasons I ended up getting a playstation and it was worth it, IMO. I hope they release it on PC and XBOX so more people get a chance to try it, but we will see

Ahh I used to play the hell out of Bloodborne back in the day. For some reason my PS5 thinks I don’t own it. All my other games transferred though. I guess I’ll have to start a new game from scratch lol
