Your Dream Job That Never Was

Game developer...:(
Depending on the types of games you want to make, it is not that difficult to learn how to do it. Especially if you want to make 2D games.

I use a program called Construct 2, they have a new version now called Construct 3 which you can try for free. Game Making Software - Construct 3 ★★★★★

You can't do everything in this program, but you can make most 2d games that you can think of and it is designed in such a way that you don't have to program everything from scratch and it is designed so it is very quick to program in and still very easy.

This makes it perfect to make games with if you are a single person.

You could easily make a game like The binding of Isaac in it if you wanted if you don't know it:

The Binding of Isaac on Steam

You might think that this is a stupid little game, but it was released in 2011 and by 2014 it had sold 3 million copies and was created by two people :)

When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a truck driver because I loved trucks. (I still do, but I don't want to be a trucker.) I come from a middle-class family, though, which in my country more or less means you absolutely have to get a university degree and have a white-collar career. So my childhood dream never came true. Instead, I ended up learning English, a lot of math, and programming.

What about you? Did you ever have a dream job but end up pursuing something else?

I wanted to be a Veterinarian but didn't have the grades for it in my first two years of college. I don't think I would have made a good one anyway.

I wanted to do that when I was really little, and then I realized animals don't like vets, and I didn't want to be the one the animals didn't like.

I'm a professional cat herder instead.

Professional trapper. My heroes were guys like Milligan and Thorpe..I know you all have no idea what I'm talking about.
Anyway, the fur market fell through, so that never worked out.

Trapping isn't that great. Did it when I was a teen. Fox, mink, beaver, raccon, etc.
Its fun for a bit but gets old.

lol Wow, that makes so much sense. I just wanted to do it because I liked animals. There are so many other jobs to do because you like animals. Herding cats is really hard, and can be dangerous. Kudos!

I'm familiar with The Binding of Isaac, although I haven't played it. I used to know how to program in Qbasic when I was a teenager, but retained none of it. I had some simplistic games that I had made saved onto a 3.5 floppy disk, but that had been lost to the sands of time. Recently I've been toying with an app called "Grasshopper" that teaches Java. I have a few game developing software titles on my steam account from past giveaways, but never really toyed with them. Unfortunately my gaming laptop was bricked by my son and my tabletop PC is ancient.

I wanted to be a writer, in some sort of context. I wrote fiction as a hobby (still do, albeit sporadically), but with a little more intent I tried pursuing a career in print media when I left high school.
Very nearly landed a job at each of Melbourne's two largest newspapers (made the final cut for both) but I was up against uni grads with journalism degrees and a much stronger portfolio, so I failed at the final hurdle in each case. No disgrace, as the positions were highly sought after.

I then failed to get into a journalism degree I applied for. It was largely entrance exam based (as had been the initial tests for each of the newspaper cadetships) and I suspect I didn't study quite as hard, or was a little over it, or just...had a bad day. They don't tell you what your score was, or how close you were.

So, that was temporarily on hold, and I ended up accepting a backup plan offer to do a teaching degree. Really enjoyed that degree, and ended up teaching for a few years (both overseas and in Australia) before tossing it in and going into the software implementation business (ERP implementation), which was quite the leap...lol

Been in that game ever since.

I can't recall having such as a child, and mostly just fell into the profession (engineering) where my talents seemed to lie, but that might have been because of educational constraints - where I had to drop some subjects (Art and French) in order to study another (General Science). Perhaps things would have been different if I had made a different decision then - given I was quite good at the two dropped. Still can't conceive of any dream job though.
