Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)--High Holy Days 2

IndigoChild5559

Loving God and my neighbor as myself.
Tonight at sunset begins Yom Kippur, which means the Day of Atonement. It will last until just after nightfall tomorrow -- about 26 hours. It is the holiest day on the Jewish Calendar. On this day we are closest to God, and to our innermost being. It is written: "For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God."

On this day we "afflict" ourselves. We mainly do this with a severe fast -- absolutely no food or drink (no, not even water). Of course, exceptions are made for children and those with health conditions. We do not wash or apply lotions or creams, do not wear leather footwear, and abstain from marital relations. We spend all day in the synagogue praying, and do a lot of that standing. It is written by the prophet Hosea that the words of our lips (prayers) shall be as bullocks (sacrifices). It is a tradition to wear white.

We ask forgiveness...
"For the sin which we have committed before you under duress or willingly.
And for the sin which we have committed before you by hard-heartedness.
For the sin which we have committed before you inadvertently.
And for the sin which we have committed before you with an utterance of the lips.
For the sin which we have committed before you with immorality.
And for the sin which we have committed before you openly or secretly.
For the sin which we have committed before you with knowledge and with deceit.
And for the sin which we have committed before you through speech."

Our choir has been rehearsing two days a week since July. I think my favorite song is this one, R'tzei.
Be gracious, Adonai our God, to your people, Israel
and receive our prayers with love
May our worship always be acceptable to you
Draw near to all who reach for you
Turn graciously to all who serve you
Spread your Spirit upon us
And let our eyes behold your compassionate return to Zion
Blessed are you, Adonai, for restoring your presence to Zion

Here is Kol Nidre by Al Jolson from 'The Jazz Singer"(1927). I first heard it the 1950s and it has always stayed with me.
Have a good fast.:)

Thank you for informing me. There's a few things I'm going to abstain from as well. Pornography and masturbation I will definitely not engage in on this holy day, and I hope I never look at pornography again.

But I will fast as well. However I'm going to drink coffee and tea.

Thanks for the songs.
Very nice.

Israel’s annual Day of Atonement was something like a spiritual spring cleaning, except for the fact that this sacred day came in the fall of the year, in September-October, six months after the celebration of Passover. According to the Israelite calendar, it came on the tenth day of the seventh month (cf. Lev. 23:26-32; Num. 29:7-11).

In one sense, Israel did not look forward to the coming of this day any more than I look forward to spring cleaning. Unlike the other Jewish holidays, the Day of Atonement was no festive event. It was a day of national mourning and repentance. This was a Sabbath day celebration, which meant that no work could be done (Lev. 23:26-32). Anyone who did not observe this Sabbath was to be cut off from his people (Lev. 23:29), which is a euphemism for being put to death. Beyond this, this was a day when the people were to “humble their souls” (cf. Lev. 16:31; 23:27; Num. 29:7), which, according to many, included fasting. This would thus be the only religious holiday which was characterized by mourning, fasting, and repentance.:

Another main theme of the day of atonement are the actions and responsibilities of the high priest. he would put aside all his high clothing and wear simple linen, he did all the work of the temple that day, none of the levites could help. presentation of the blood in the holiest of holies, etc. the whole day was a work he had to perform alone. just jesus did.

I'm very touched. It never ceases to surprise me when I run into a Christian who desires to participate to some small extent. It seems to be a more common today, but still a whispish minority. May I ask you what inspired you to take part?

On the day of atonement, the high priest went into the holy of holies to burn incense.

It is a day where I like to burn lots of incense and I did.

I want to unite myself to the Jews as they do penance for the atonement of sins.

I also think Jews should have a temple. Christians have so many churches and Muslims have so many mosques, it would be nice if the Jews had a temple in their Holy Land.

I also think it's amazing how a book written by ancient Jews has such an incredible impact on our world to this day. It will be interesting to witness the destiny of God's chosen people unfold.
