One, I can think of, reputedly said:
“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
Yup. Selfless people, like Jesus, are a rarity. That's the point.

Similar to @stvdv there are no teachings in my traditions that state people are somehow inherently "unworthy" when it comes to developing relationships with the gods. This sort of guilt-laden way of thinking about ourselves is generally absent in contemporary Pagan traditions or Unitarian Universalism. I'm guessing this notion of being unworthy comes from that mythos about "original sin" in some Christian traditions? That's not an element of the stories I sing.

This doesn't mean that worth doesn't come into play when developing relationships with the gods, though. Honestly, it's not really different than relationships with people. If you try to develop an amicable relationship with someone who you have little in common with - or possibly offend in some rather direct ways - it's not going to work too well. In that sense, you are "unworthy" of having a relationship with each other, but that in no way reflects poorly on either of you. It just means you are really different from one another and aren't going to get along well. Oil and water, as it were. Usually the gods you worship on a regular basis are those that are more closely aligned to who you are as a person. You get along well, can become good friends, and are "worthy" of each other's time and attention. Peas in a pod, as it were.
