Women in Afghanistan

Reports in the media (The Independent, BBC, etc) recently have highlighted the conditions for women in Afghanistan. Today's (technically yesterday's) Independent ran a story starting on page 2 about the lack (or loss) of freedoms and basic human rights for many women including, incarceration for deserting their husbands, reports of domestic abuse (87% of those questioned), forced marriages, slavery, and education being banned.

This is several years after our military intervention "freed" them.

Do our governments have a responsibility here?

of course! but the populations of our countries haven't the will to do anything about it .

you cant drag a middle age country kicking and screaming into the 21st century especially when the opposition is doing everything in its power to keep it there
