why wars have to be lethal?

Why are wars lethal? Why wars are not fought through competion of intelligence of armies or why they are not paintball fights or water wars? Why higher capacity of life taking and performance of damage to life is an indication of being stronger? Under what conditions wars wouldnt be lethal?

If the opposing groups don't mutually feel the others want to play a game then there will be force, violence, death, etc. If they could reason over friendly bouts of competition and discourse they wouldn't be at war. Some ideologies and goons can't be reasoned with.

Remove the blood and tears.
Everyone lives.

Trouble is....some people are willing to die.
And they are willing to take you with them.

Seems there are a few who believe you are not worthy the breath you breathe.

Because if it wasn't lethal, it would be called full contact football.

The whole point of wars is to exert supremacy over dissenters to the point of solving political dissent or demographic problems.

Particularly when the problems are demographical in nature (e.g. too many people to confortably live in a certain area), that is very difficult to achieve without killing people of both sides until stability is reached.

Read Good Omens by Pratchett and Gaiman and ye shall have your answer.

We haven't figured it out yet.

One way it might work is if the tech temporarily disables the enemy combatant, effectively taking him/her out of the conflict until its resolution. Like in Ender's Game, where the blasters paralyze you but don't kill you, making you essentially a "dead" member of the team.

Wars must be lethal, or at least threaten lethality.
If there were a non-lethal wars or some other deciding contest, the losing side wouldn't abandon
their efforts to avoid the costs of a loss. Instead, they'd resort to the next level of conflict.

You might go to violent war..... you might already have gone to violent war.

Have you ever lost your temper? When a country does this, it's lethal.....

If a robber ran at you in the darkness, would you defend, or would you say, 'Hi! OK..... we can handle this non-violently! I have a dice..... want to play for my watch?'

Cops have to fight lethal battles on your streets every day..... they're just smaller versions of war.
So when a country comes at another, violently, for its land or other wealth, it's violent war.

I agree with oldbadger. Until we can eliminate our violence on an individual basis, we can't eliminate violence on a national level.
