To note first, any person or group that calls themselves christian and fight/kill are not christians.
Christianity divides constantly because people interject opinion as doctrine. Over time, centuries or even a few years, those opinions become tradition. Opinion is good except when it is forced on others just because they are a part of a "flavor" of Christianity. That forcing further divides.
Another factor that effects division is power. Religion is the only thing that kills more people than politics; it is much more powerful than politics. Using the Roman Catholic Church as an example (sorry to add to the never ending criticism): the church admittedly grew more corrupted as it gained power. The church is, afterall, only human. The power grew until salvation could be purchased using money (most likely one of the worst lies in history). What we see now with priestly corruption coming to light is the church working on finishing off the corruption its worldly power has caused. Likewise, the evangelical movement as it gains worldly power will/is corrupt. This happens whenever religion gets intertwined with the world. This corruption, of course, causes division as members leave for less corruption.
Overall, it is best if we render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. The RC, evangelical churches, etc should withdraw from political worldly power and influence less directly to help prevent this corruption and further division.
Considering how Jesus associated His church with His body, I hope the cuts these divisions cause His body doesn't wound Him too much. The idea that Christians could be hurting our savior deeply should give us pause.
