What do you mean by "Why" ?
Because it is! It is actually the Dharma SanAtana -- that Dharma which is eternal!
It is cyclic and never dies and goes as far back as 50, 60, 100,000 years that we can tell. Beyond that we cannot, except when the trikAla darshi ParamAtmA conveys about it.

It is old because the two components which make it are aboriginal. They were not started even mythologically by any person.
Mythologically, by that I mean that we have no such mythological person like Moses to have brought the rules.
The two components are Vedic (Aryan) religion and the indigenous religions which had Shiva, Rama, Krishna and the Mother Goddess as their deities.
Both components have their history going back to at least 5,000 years - in the Vedas and in Indus Valley Civilization.
