So how do I trust what I read in the Bible when I encounter obvious falsehoods?

John 14:13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

John 16:23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Those two statements are obvious falsehood!

Now I'm aware of James 1

"But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord".

But here in lies the problem. One of the definitions of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." I've asked many times for noble graces and virtues to help me serve and obey God, and not received them. I asked in Jesus name without doubting, but when God repeatedly is unfaithful to his word, that is when the doubt starts to set in. If God would be faithful to His Word, I wouldn't doubt.

I know you're reading this Mr. God!! ;)

I confronted this issue years ago.
I gave up on it for years.
Then i realized that i was taught to interpret it all wrong.

Well why is the Bible written in codes that are hard to interpret? It doesn't mean what it says. Why did God give us a book that doesn't mean the words it says? Why give us a book that is so hard to interpret that so many will misinterpret?

Since it doesn't mean what it says, how does one ever know if they have the right interpretation?

You can't figure out the size of the universe if you never leave the room in your house.

Agreed that what you posted are falsehoods. There are plenty of sincere believers who don't get what they ask/pray for, and those statements would indicate that they should - and it does, indeed bode ill for belief when the statements made don't hold up to realities experienced.

And I absolutely despise when pious individuals then make the claim that the person doing the asking must still have something wrong in their lives, or that they may not be as sincere in their beliefs as they feel they are. It is insult tucked away within piety - whereby those same pious people are seen to "fall from grace" at the very thoughts they believe are true and "right" in this context.

There is plenty of room for doubt. Too much for me to consider even the slightest breath of belief.

    It means what it says.
And it is not confusing at all.
Remember, scripture was written to you.
We are all the same inside, so the scripture is able to be a catalyst to enlightenment for everyone.
The key of knowledge is to apply it to yourself.

No, it doesn't mean what it says. "And I will do whatever you ask in my name",doesn't mean I will do whatever you ask in my name.

"My Father will give you whatever you ask in my name" doesn't mean my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. It doesn't mean what it says. o_O

You want to know my honest and true opinion? I would get to know god Without the bible. It sounds like the bible is triping you up in understanding god. I notice some posts you relate to comments about god and others it is as if youre mad at him.

I cant remember if you were catholic, but if you were and still hold those beliefs, Id go to the church. The bible can only provide you with a limited amount of information. Its a moral book (in general) not one for accuracy.

Also, life today is not like life then. Its like using a tool youd fix a Benz Patent-Motorwagen with on a Mecedez Bens. Its a good tool to understand the history of cars but like cell phones you cant use a flip phone cover for your IPad.

Instead, step back from the bible and any book for that matter. Religion is full of contradictions only because you are looking at the writings of the human heart. Who on this earth is not his own oxymoron?

I hope you aren't implying that I don't leave my room. I've gone on adventures to many different states, been to monasteries, been to various facilities, been to jail, left the country, gone over seas, lived on a yacht, and I've been homeless on the streets.

That was excellent advice! Thank you! You are a wise lady :)

I have stepped away from the Bible and I follow my heart and pray to God and the spirits I feel close to, and follow the inspirations of my heart and conscience over the Bible, because I find my heart and conscience to contradict itself far less than the Bible.

However, since this is a place for Religious debates, I figure it is good for me to present these concerns. Maybe I'll learn something from the comments. Maybe I'll help some of the Bible folk to better understand why some people have beef with God and Scripture. But you are absolutely right!

Yes, I like that. The Kingdom of Heaven is within. That is a beautiful reality.

It doesn't make those false statements any more true though. God has been unfaithful to his word.

But I thank you for reminding me that the Kingdom of Heaven is within me. It's good to be reminded of that and I'll write that down. :)

I assume this is an analogy of some kind, but how would leaving the room in ones house enable a person to figure out the size of the universe?

I took this to mean that you can't figure out the "realities" The Bible has to offer until you have replaced it with the "Urantia Book". How close did I get, and do I get a prize?

Equally important: even if you could interpret it correctly who would let you explain it to them? If they listened then how much would they understand? If they understood how much would they remember? Why do Jewish people wear hats? Without looking tell me what the first sentence in this paragraph was. You do not remember do you. Don't tell me that you do.

Christians would say that those passages are interpreted wrongly. Is anyone here willing to attempt to explain the meaning of those passages?
