When you are or belong to something, e.g., a country or have a certain religious background, but only nominally and don't really care about it in day to day life, and even slag it off, but when someone else attacks it all of a sudden you go warrior mode? For instance:

One Brit: The royal family sucks. I hate them all. All they do is take our money. To hell with the Queen.
    Other Brit: I know, right?
Foreigner: The Queen is a ****
The two Brits: WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY ABOUT OUR QUEEN???

    Or...

    Jewish-by-birth person: I don't believe Moses existed.
Non-Jew: Moses was a murderer, he deserved to die.
Jewish-by-birth person: What the actual hell? Moshe was the only prophet to speak directly to HaShem, he gave us the Toyrah!

Does this phenomenon, which happens all the time, have an actual name?

Right Brain In Left Brain, Left Brain In Right Brain or RBILBLBIRB for short. Since the acronym is unpronounceable people usually say 'Ribbleburble'. Used in a sentence you'd use it like this: "That's ribbleburble."

The lower mind which loves to compare/contrast and fight over which is the one true right interpretations. Unless of course as noted you put your own viewpoint in. Then it's "we're allies until we get "him", then we'll settle it.

No two people agreeing on how to call it.

It was certainly a good question to present, @Rival

In-group bias. A perceived threat to the group generates increased individual identification with the group. (They're idiots, but they're OUR idiots...)

    Tribalism - because humans. : )
