What's the rational, reasonable explanation for this phenomenon?

I use Facebook Messenger daily for quick communications to and from a small circle of folks and daily I find a list of "People You May Know." Invariably, I don't know them and/or don't want "to know" them, so I remove them. I've posted an inquiry to the FB folks asking them to cut it out, but I never get a response and everyday, there's a new list of "People You May Know." The daily appearance of the list continues to annoy me and has made me start to wonder if their appearance is a paranormal phenomenon.

Does anyone have a rational, reasonable explanation for it?

In short, capitalism. Do you want a longer one?

I don't see the connection. Is it an interesting or amusing one?

The longer one: The more friends you have and it is the program "Facebook" that makes the list, the more time you will properly spent on Facebook and the more advertisements you see. That is how the company "Facebook" make money.

I have 2 fb accounts, one for close friends and family and one for everyone else.

The only difference between the two is one is set to private the other to public.

On the private one i receive no notifications, on the public one its, shall i say, not a few people i may know and friend requests. I no longer bother with deleting them.

If you use it only for a close circle of acquaintances then maybe the public/private switch in security settings could solve your problem.

Well, if that can depend on the cookies and other things on your computer. If you had 2 computers with different IPs and different mail-accounts, you might get different adds. It would then depend if there was a difference on what you clicked on.

Socialist countries have a similar list.
For example, N Korea has (translated) Komradbook.
Every day it provides a list of "People You Should Surveil".
    (I belong, & it's really annoying. Btw, you're on today's list.)

Our system is hidden behind the router which serves the IP so protecting individual devices from hackers.
Unless a device is using a vpn to simulate a different country then we all get essentially the same stuff. At the moment its huge discounts for spending a fortune buying a fully electric car.

Unless that car is a Citroen ami that seemingly you can only buy from an electrical appliance store.

    Don't know if this helps...
I use DuckDuckGo as my search engine, I've installed Adblock Plus and always turn off "personalised ads" on things.
I get no ads on RF and don't seem to get inundated with guff.

o_O No we don’t. Micromarketing has been around for years.
Currently I only see ads for Hulu/Disney, organic farming equipment, and carpentry/paving tools.
With a few more Google searches these will all change within a day or two.

Yeah, but that requires that you can do that and understand what it does. Not all user of computers have the same skill level. Now I used to work in part in effect as IT-supporter and super-user on some aspects of computers, so I get what you are doing. But to some people it is meaningless.

Maybe the french marketers are a behind the times.

I dont take much notice of FB ads, but this new wave of car ads has been around for about 2 months.

Edit : we also have personalised ads off and only have full location wiith gps selected for special searches. Usual our location is seen as being 200 km away in Bordeaux.

Ahh, having personalised ads switched off may be the reason we get so many car ads.

Were you in the market for cars, or doing searches on climate change, or energy efficient air conditioners, etc....etc... about 2 months ago?
Try clicking on some clothing ads or do some Google shopping for dresses or bathing suits.... I’ll bet that in a day or two, the ads you start to see wil no longer be about cars, but will change over to summer clothes. ;)

Maybe this whole time they've meant "know" Biblically? Maybe this is FB's defunct dating service that they just keep hoping catches on? ;)

RF gives me a constant stream of ads. Many of the ads are about products I have put into Google searches.
