What would be your "stump speech?" Here's mine.

You're just one vote.

You're underestimating my army of followers!!! When we pool ALL our resources together we have...

*quickly counts*

...err...1 vote. Bugger. That didn't quite work out the way I had planned. In fact, if it's a US election, I have zero votes.

*wonders if it's too late to boycott the election, and once again raise the People's Democratic Frubal Ninja Army, so as to be thoroughly revolting.*

*coughs lightly, and steps up to the microphone*

Ladies and gentlemen of the United States of America,
I have watched with dismay as your once great country has fallen foul of her enemies.
I have wept almost completely real tears thinking on the words of the Founding Fathers, and how we've lost our way.
Enemies within her borders, who have lost sight of the very things that made America great. Enemies without, keen to make their stamp on your world.
And 'lo, I have decided it is time. Time, friends, to recover America's place at the forefront of enlightened thinking. To recover America's place as the world's leading exporter of Righteousness.

This is a Freedom led recovery, people. America!!

Now, I know. All the rah-rah rhetoric in the world isn't going to get us back to where we belong. Instead, what I promise you is blood, sweat, tears, and a little slice of the American Dream all for yourself. The American Dream isn't dead, people, it's just hibernating in downtown Detroit. We're gonna wake that bad boy up with the roar of a Chevvy big block, and kick this economy back into gear. America!!!

And yes. I realise the world has changed. No longer is this the world of our parents, where the shadow of the Cold War stood long across the continents. But the need for leadership remains. Strong, decisive leadership. The sort of leadership that gives clear direction. The sort of leadership that carries us forwards, whilst acknowledging the greatness of those upon whose shoulders we stand.

Unlike my...*coughs lightly*...honourable opponents, I am not about to try and bribe you with holidays, or candy, or tax breaks. All I can offer you is a place at the wheel, and the chance to turn the American ship back on course to the land of opportunity.

Thank-you...thank-you all. You're too kind.

I'll give everyone a $50K personal income tax exemption and balance the budget.
I'll do that by nationalising nonrenewable resources like fossil fuels and minerals and old growth forests and charging for them.
If you didn't make it, it is not yours!
Tom

Oh, and Dave lewisnotmiller will be my vice emperor. Or speechwriter if that's the best I can do

Oh, I thought at first you were going to give us all $50k...I would vote for you, then. :)

You might be surprised at how close I could come. Eliminate "life" tax, AKA income tax. Crank up the "death" tax, AKA inheritance tax. Cut the military budget down to national defense. Charge for the exploitation of natural resources. Make profitable corporations actually pay taxes. Crank up property taxes some.
It's really not that hard, once you get over the idea that rich people deserve to stay rich.

Rich people might not have started out rich, they may have worked hard to get there...BUT...the problem with many wealthy people is greed, and capitalism wasn't created on a greed principle. In theory, it could or should be a positive thing, but human beings tend to mess things up. lol

Your ideas could work, give everyone $50k, and have Mondays off with my plan, and the US will be on a path to being a supah powah again. ^_^

To which capitalism are you referring?
The only one I know about is the law of the jungle written down neatly in law books. Greed is the defining principle.
Tom
If you look up the purest of definitions for it, it really wasn't intended to be what it has become.

"Purest"?
It was an improvement over the God ordained aristocracy that preceded it. But it has always been about greed. Balancing out mutual greed, it was great in the 18th century.
Now we have socialism. It's as much better than capitalism as capitalism was better than the divine rights of the aristocracy.
