What made the Israelites so special as a people...?

Earthling

David Henson

Their cultural practices and sacrifices weren't similar. Abraham was selected for his faith. He was willing to sacrifice his son, knowing that Jehovah could resurrect him. So he was chosen to produce the people who would produce the Messiah, God's own son whom he was therefore willing to sacrifice. The offspring of Abraham were molded, as a nation of Laws to instruct them for a need of that Messiah. If the people had not inherited sin there would be no need of a sacrifice, they could have kept the law. If they were not aware of the Law they wouldn't know that they had sinned. So they were obviously not meant to keep it, only to learn from it.

For example, blood is the soul, the life of any living, breathing creature. Life belongs to the creator. Adam's sin caused all to inherit this sin, this missing of the mark. In order for there to be justice a worthy person, who, like Adam, could uphold the Law due to his absence of sin, could offer his then equal blood as suitable sacrifice in payment for Adam's blood. Much like when a person was found murdered outside of town and no one knew who the murderer was, so his blood couldn't be spilled for justice (eye for eye, tooth for tooth, soul for soul) then the nearest town had to sacrifice the blood of a bull. In this way the people learned of their need of a Messiah.

It was the Jews who declared themselves special, wasn't it?

Rather, I find it was God's promise to father Abraham that made them special (set apart) til Messiah arrived.
- Genesis 12:3; Genesis 22:18.
That is because Messiah would then come through Abraham's line.
