What Liberals and Conservatives Agree on...

In these polarised times, it is worth keeping in mind that from the age of enlightenment up until the new deal in the 1930s, what we now consider to be "liberals" and "conservatives" were basically the same. Even today, they remain committed to roughly the same liberal, democratic system but with some differences on the degree of government intervention in the economy and society and the extent of individual liberties.

Here's some things both (American) Liberals and Conservatives will probably agree on. Whilst you may not agree with everyone, or might have some reservations about each of them, chances are you agree with most of them.
  1. The United States should be Republic with an elected head of state.
  2. Rejection of hereditary titles of nobility
  3. No religion should become an established religion with offical privallages or recognition
  4. The seperation of powers between executive, legislative and judical branches of government
  5. The independence of the judiciary from political interference (such as the executive)
  6. The rule of law
  7. The Presumption of innocence and the burden of proof on the accuser
  8. Civillan control of the military and opposing military coups and dictatorships in the USA.
  9. The abolition of slavery and the slave trade
  10. Opposition to Child Labour
  11. Legal equality on the basis of gender, race and religion and rejection of segregation and discrimination by the state
  12. Freedom of the Press
  13. Freedom of Speech
  14. Freedom to peaceably assemble and the right to protest
  15. Freedom of Religion and religious tolerance
  16. The Right to Own Property
  17. The Right to Exchange, Buy and Sell Property
  18. The right to vote in free, fair and competitive elections with multiple parties (and that a one-party state isn't a "real" democracy and cannot represent the people)
  19. The right to privacy and opposition to mass survaillance by governments and corporations
  20. Government should not regulate people's sexual activities in the bedroom
What else do Liberals and Conservatives agree on? Can you think of any others? o_O

In my experience Conservatives are prime to not giving a damn about that. Such as Pence, who is anti-woman and anti-LGBT. He only backed down on his own RFRA because the state would have lost too much money over it. Conservatives thought him weak. Many governors did not back down. This does include discrimination at the state and private level.

Within their moderate incarnations, liberals and conservatives probably do agree on most issues. Their differences are mainly by degrees, not so much "ideological," per se.

An analogous situation might be rival sects within the same religion, but that doesn't mean that they're different religions. They still agree on the same basic principles, so their arguments and disputes seem to revolve around the notion that one side is more orthodox or more "true" to the religion than the other.

I think about this whenever I see arguments about who is "more American" or who is "un-American." There are often arguments where people invoke the Founding Fathers and their early writings (including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, etc.). I've often seen people picking apart the Second Amendment, analyzing every word and alternate interpretation - as if they're arguing over verses in the Bible and trying to determine what "God" actually wants from us.

Most Americans agree with each other much more than the media would lead you to believe. "The system" has an interest in keeping the people divided.

#16 sees a bit more disagreement than the others.
#20 a lot more.

But people in groups are still individuals.
Dick Cheney was pro-gay rights while the
Clintons were still opposing gay marriage.

One thing that's worth keeping in mind is that people can have conservative economic views but liberal views on social issues or vice versa. If somebody is economically conservative but socially liberal, there's a good chance I'll agree with them on issues like LGBT rights.

When somebody is conservative both economically and socially, there will naturally be fewer issues we agree on. One that immediately springs to mind though is corruption, cronyism and self-interest among politicians. Very few people on either side of the left/right divide look favourably on that kind of behaviour. The sources of disagreement here tend to be about which politicians are the worst and what should be done about it.

Pence is anti-women? How so? Is this based on his refusal to eat alone with a woman (who's not his wife), or is there something else?
He doesn't even want women in the military, to the point of laughing at the idea of it. Some other stuff, buts one I remember right now.

Just a side-note. I don't know if Pence is anti all women in the military or just female combat fighters, but here in Israel this is an issue that many people disagree on, and on the against side it isn't at all just religious people. Many secular people are against female combat fighters too, because of years of research showing that combat service harms most women's bodies, very often causing permanent damage.

There is disagreement, and then there is mocking and chuckling at the idea on your radio show.

I do not see #1 as an agreement since many on left want national votes over the EC system.

#6 is a simplification. There is a major disagreement over what should be and not should be lawful.

#13 is not agreed upon as many on the left want hate speech laws.

That's a form of disagreement. But again, I don't know Pence's reasoning.
Basically, what he says tends to come from his fundamentalist beliefs, or his corporate sponsors (it's no coincidence he downplayed the risks of smoking).

Hmmm...I've know many male former soldiers.
They too have permanent damage...shrapnel still
lodged, maimed hands & arms, etc. It seems fair
that women should be allowed to bear this cost too.

No, I wasn't talking about that type of damage. Pelvic organ prolapse, severe muscle strain, fertility problems, stuff like that. Not "accidental damage" - I mean, not every combat fighter finishes their service missing limbs, and even civilians can end up like that. Damage that can happen even without experiencing real action, but comes from the intensive training.
The current solution the IDF has found is to drastically lower the training standards. But that brings us to a new problem: what if these women do experience real action? Will they be properly prepared? Unfortunately, in many cases, they simply dropped the ball, so to speak.

I see.....there's certainly a problem in trying to impose political correctness in combat conditions.

A good example where this broke down was the left leadership and minions made Trump guilty of the collusion delusion. Trump was not presumed innocent, but he had to prove himself innocent against false accusations of guilt. What percent of leftist assumed guilt based on fakes news and lying leaders and not innocent until proven guilty?

In the end, it required the Mueller scam, who concluded we have no evidence of guilt, but we cannot prove innocence to exonerate him. This conclusion was a continuation scam, to leave open another round of guilty until proven innocent (not guilty but not exonerated) which did not materialize. Fake news was beat down, and the lying Democrats had egg on heir face, so scam two fizzled.

Trump, Barr and Durham have not formerly arrested anyone for the attempted Coup, and then expect everyone arrested to prove their innocence at their own expense, as the Democrats did to Trump, his family and many of his supporters.

Instead team Trump have been building a case against them in accordance with the spirit of innocent until proven guilty. If the Democrats had been in charge and Schiff was a Republican he would have been in jail by now, force to prove his innocence until bankrupt. The Democrats did this to General Flynn. There needs to be jail time for all the criminals who perverted justice. If not, the same criminals will try this again.

The impeachment, which came from the same cast of characters, was also based on being accused obi third hand witness accounts, of crimes, using a stacked witness deck, Trump had to prove himself innocent of breaking any law. The corona virus also has Democrats accusing Trump of all types of things. The criminals have not been punished, so they continue to corrupt justice.

Didn't Senator Schumer threaten the two new Supreme Count Justices, thereby attempting to merge the view of two branches of government, to his own, via his threat? He was censored and should have been impeached? The left is not afraid to use dirty tricks to merge branches of government, to their own benefit.

What about freedom of speech and PC censorship that always benefits the left? Name me one example of Conservative free speech censorship that only benefits the right? Liberal FaceBook only censors conservatives if they are effective in making people think.

Trump was elected to correct the wrongs of the criminal Democrat leadership, and help the liberal base be more fair minded, and less influenced by criminal opportunists.

I get the impression this topic is part of new and improved propaganda strategy, by the Democrats, to confuse the lines they like to cross. The logical goal is to make them appear less criminal and less guilty of line crossing. The Barr and Durham report is coming soon, and the criminals would like be seem as doing the opposite of what they did. If you are on the left, and agree with the list, your real enemies are your scamming leaders,

The EC system is not a requirement for republics.

I agree with you on both of those. Although it bears mentioning that I have also seen people on the right wanting to restrict free speech when it comes down to talking about Jesus.

So? The EC is the established system. A lot of Dems want to remove it. Ergo my point stands.

Religion, McCarthyism, slavery, abolition of slavery, pronouns. There is always something said someone does not like.
