Devatā and deva mean god or deity. iṣṭa means beloved, loved, cherished. So iṣṭadevatā means "cherished/beloved deity". I think the word devoto in Portuguese has the same root as devoted and devotion.

"Devata" means a god, and 'Ishta' translates as favourite.
So 'Ishta Devata' means favorite god.

It's so simple I probably shouldn't say. So, I won't.
I'm going with the afterlife in the LDS Church. It is greater than any promised by any other religions. If I don't make it there, it will probably be because I replaced my higher power with erotic dancing girls.
