We as Ahmadi Muslims believe the Promised Messiah (as) also referred to as the Messiah and Imam Mahdi (Ibn Maryam in prophetic texts) was a prophet of God sent in the latter days as foretold the in the Quran, Hadith, the Bible, and other religious scriptures.
He established the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in 1889 as a movement to revive the true teachings of Islam as taught by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw). His purpose was to save Islam from the onslaught of Christianity and the internal destruction of Muslims who had lost the true picture of Islam and broken into numerous Sects and internal divisions.
We also believe that a Prophet of God can come after the Holy Prophet (saw) just as other Muslims believe in the second coming of Jesus (as). But we do not accept that even one iota of religious laws and teachings of Islam can be changed under the coming of a Prophet(as). Such a prophet must be to revive Islam and not to overwrite any of its teachings as the Holy Quran has said that Islam is a perfected religion. The Quran has been promised protection from changes in text but also in meaning. Which is achieved through Mujjadids that we believe were sent in every century until the coming of the Imam Mahdi (as) who had to overcome the greater challenge than faced by prior reformers of Islam.
The only difference between Orthodox Muslims is that we believe him to be Ummati (from among the Muslims) rather than from the dispensation of Moses (as).
This concept in our understanding of the Holy Quran does not contradict with the highest status of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) which can only be described through the term Khataman Nabiyyeen (the Seal of the Prophets) who was the best model for mankind and the most beloved Messenger of Allah (swt).
In order to investigate the truth of the claim of the Promised Messiah (as) it is necessary for the seekers of truth to first turn to the Holy Quran and see if there is even a possibility for a Messenger of Allah (swt) to come after our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw). I will try to address this soon, as it is most important to understand the meaning of Khataman Nabiyyeen as understood by first sources of the Holy Quran which cannot possible contradict given a correct interpretation, and next in reference to the usage of the term in Early Islamic Sources.
For Clarification: I do not have more time currently. I have to make sure I state that a small portion of Ahmadi Muslims broke away from the Community after rejecting the bait of the second Khalifatul Massih after passing of the first Khalifatul Massih as they differed in opinion on Khilafat and formed as separate community, known as "Ahmadiyya Anjuman Ishaat-e-Islam Lahore". They later differed in perspective and believed the Promised Messiah (as) was only a reformer and not a Prophet of God.
