For Christians who believe Hell only means death or the grave and not a place of torment, what do the biblical references for the Lake of Fire allude to?

For Christians who believe hell is a place of torment and punishment, is the Lake of Fire Hell itself, or is it something else?

What is the Lake of Fire?

I think it is a strong Jewish alcohol, probably at 160 proof perhaps judging from the early Jewish writings. I heard they wrote about talking snakes and wrestling with gods so I presume the liquor was pretty strong.

    Revelations 21:8

8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

The scripture clearly says the lake of fire is the second death, or the death of the soul.

The eternal torment you think of is not biblical. It is from works of fiction like Divine Comedy - Wikipedia. Which was loosely based on the Bible but not an accurate representation of what the Bible says.

It's a stick to the carrot of orthodox beliefs. It grabs those who would rather just avoid "hell" by seeing that the church will save them.

It's one of the most sadistic ideas humans ever formulated too. Frequently, you encounter those folks that just love the idea of eternal torment. You can tell they're getting real worked up at the prospect.

It's interesting that the lake of fire is exclusively a New Testament concept not referenced or mentioned anywhere in the Old Testament. It's strictly a Christian invention.

    You have asked :-
"What is the Lake of Fire?"

The Lake of Fire is the outer fringe of the body of God The Father
It is below and outside of the Lower Hell

    You have asked
"For Christians who believe hell is a place of torment and punishment, is the Lake of Fire Hell itself, or is it something else?"

Christians should occupy their time developing a relationship with the Holy Ghost
to the point at which they no longer need to 'believe' because they will know

My experience is that the Lake of Fire is no place of torment, though personality can be removed there. The Lower Hell is the Christian place of torment in as much as everything is done to change you.

    You have asked :-
"For Christians who believe Hell only means death or the grave and not a place of torment, what do the biblical references for the Lake of Fire allude to?"

If you have nothing else to go on but the plain words on the page in the bible you are left with the impression that Hell only means death or the grave
A general outline of the role of the Lower Hell demarcs the difference between those who walk with the Holy Ghost and simple word worshippers

First off, the Bible states that “death and hell were cast into the Lake of Fire” at Revelation 20:14.

Hell cant be the L of F, If hell is thrown into it.

What does the L of F mean?

That verse also says death was hurled into the L of F. Death isn’t something tangible, that can be burned. If you turn to the next chapter, Revelation 21:4, it says “death will be no more”.

Sometimes fire, in the Bible, is symbolic and represents ‘complete destruction’: just like literal fire.... if you burn something up, you ain’t gettin it back, ever!

So the Bible’s telling us that Adamic death (ie., death through sin, what we got from Adam — Romans 5:12) will be gone, forever!

And hell will be gone...no more Grave (which is hell...That’s what Jesus was in, for parts of three days! — Acts of the Apostles 2:25-27.)

    Not entirely.

    Exodus 3:2-4

2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

God is depicted as a fire here with Moses in the Old Testament.

Also Pillar of Fire (theophany) - Wikipedia

Which backs up this from the New Testament.

    Hebrews 12:29

29 For our God is a consuming fire.

Which goes along with Revelations 21:8. And other Revelations mentions of lake of fire and judgment.

    Not Christian - but -

The idea was used by other religions before the Hebrew picked it up, and of course the Christians.

It seems to be a metaphorical refining.

The base word in Tanakh actually refers to a refiner's furnace that burns off the dross (impurities,) leaving the pure.

Mal 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

Mal 3:3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

Zec 13:9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

Later people seem to be turning a metaphorical refining process into an eternal torturing place.

Isaiah 34:8-10 For Yahweh has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion. (9) Its streams will be turned into pitch, its dust into sulfur, And its land will become burning pitch. (10) It won’t be quenched night nor day. Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation, it will lie waste. No one will pass through it forever and ever.

Isaiah 30:33 For his burning place has long been ready. Yes, for the king it is prepared. He has made its pyre deep and large with fire and much wood. Yahweh’s breath, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.

Isaiah 66:24 “They will go out, and look at the dead bodies of the men who have transgressed against me; for their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind.” (Mark 9:43-48)
In other cultures, like the Greeks the Lake of Fire already existed in Tartarus below Hades...

In the Bible tho, this place is opened at the final judgement to chuck all the demons from this realm into.

Sometimes ponder the circle of rebirth happens within nature, once we fall below the roots and fungi, what can make us circulate; so do we then fall into the Lava and is that like a Lake of Fire.

    In my opinion. :innocent:
