A catechism is a set of questions and answers used to mentally organize theological doctrine. Chatechisms do not add anything to Holy Scripture (or at least they do not intend to). They simply organize the information found therein in an easily digestable format for learning, especially for teaching young people.

There are many Catechisms used in the Christian faith.
I don't know anything about the RCIA.
