Chief Rabbi Safran gives this beautiful description of a Hasid in his book "Wisdom of Kabbalah". Safran writes: "... In truth, the supreme goal of the Hasid is Devekut; he yearns to “cleave” to God, to be near to Him, he longs to be with Him...by the study of Torah he seeks to “cleave” to Him...the Hasid observes the mitzvoth not to gain advantage from them, but to be be-zavta, “together with”, to be an associate with Him who has given them...The Hasid mitpallell, "prays"...to "cleave" to Him, for prayer is devekut: "naftulei Elokim niftalti" (cf Targum Onkelos to Gen:30:8: "I struggled in Prayer with God...")..." p.49
