I'm not middle aged but I have heard this term before Infact there's even a song about this phenomenon from 1992 called mid life crisis. So what exactly is a mid life crisis and how does one identity one ?

Life looses meaning, one searches for different answers to the path they are walking.

I haven't had one, though I have been spending time reading books I've wanted to for years but haven't yet.

Midlife crisis is when you begin to get a clue that all that scratching and clawing to get to the top of the hill has only gotten you a lot of broken fingernails and a better view of the bottom.
I imagine that must drive at least a lot of it. It's not designed for personal enrichment or advancement, it's not intended to make society a better place, but were told we must pursue success as defined by corporate wankers who want us to slave away for them and give our lives to them so we can live in their materialist glory that were told will give us fulfillment and joy and give our hard earned money back to them (but in practice it works more like a drug dealer pushing stuff to create a market through addiction).
And you do along with it and realize it's nit what you want but what someone else conned you into and find a big, empty void in your life that all your material junk didn't actually fill.

It's a modern mythology - a socially constructed narrative that brings context and meaning to a (relatively) common human experience. Specifically, it's an identity crisis related to mortality that is believed to occur when one already has an established position and role in society for some years (hence midlife). It is a wondering of "why have I been doing this with my life and have I wasted it" moment. When you are young you will have all these hopes and dreams about what you are supposed to have "accomplished" in life, and now you are at that point where you "should" have done those things. You haven't. In really simple terms, it is a crisis born of dumb and unrealistic expectations of ourselves (or those hoisted on us by society).

I don't believe in it.

Probably because I believe in simply being who you are and accepting reality (and yourself) for what it is.

A midlife crisis is when you realize you will never achieve your ambitions and dreams and it gets to you.

A midlife crisis is when you see an old friend at the store, and instead of saying hi, you turn and walk away. Then you go home and realize that all of your friendships have come and gone away.

A midlife crisis is when all of your pets begin to age out and die, and you begin to understand how much more loss is in store for you, through the function of death, until the day you die.

A midlife crisis is when you realize that you will never love anyone like you loved your ex, even though it has been many years since.

That's not a midlife crisis, thats just not keeping up with friends.

You're not even 30.
thats true. But who says I'm not halfway through my life already. I'd be willing to bet I've already hit my halfway point. I have gone through all of my "mid life crisis'". Now I've gone through them, I wait for the near end.
