    2 Peter 3:13*(Amplified Bible)

13But we look for new heavens and a new earth according to His promise, in which righteousness (uprightness, freedom from sin, and right standing with God) is to abide.

What are the new heavens and new earth? I'd once again like to know people's opinions on that scripture. Thanks

We read at 2 Peter 3:13: "There are new heavens and a new earth that we are awaiting according to his promise, and in these righteousness is to dwell." You may already have learned that Jesus in heaven is the key Ruler in the "new heavens." (Luke 1:32, 33) Yet, other Bible texts indicate that he does not rule alone. Jesus promised that the apostles and some others like them would have a place in heaven. In the book of Hebrews, the apostle Paul described such ones as "partakers of the heavenly calling." And Jesus said that those of this group would sit on thrones in heaven with him. (Hebrews 3:1; Matthew 19:28; Luke 22:28-30; John 14:2, 3) The point is that others reign with Jesus as part of the new heavens. Then what did Peter mean by the term "new earth"?

As with the ancient fulfillment—the return of the Jews to their homeland—the current fulfillment of 2 Peter 3:13 involves people who submit to rulership by the new heavens. You can find millions today who are gladly submitting to such rulership. They are benefiting from its educational program and striving to follow its laws found in the Bible. (Isaiah 54:13) These make up the basis of "a new earth" in the sense that they form a global society of all nationalities, languages, and races, and they work together in submission to the reigning King, Jesus Christ. A significant fact is that anyonecan be part of this!—Micah 4:1-4.

Grace is the ability to act JUST LIKE GOD (think of "graceful").

As Christians we are GROWING in God's grace everyday.

In the new heaven and new earth... WE WILL BE LIKE JESUS; Full of grace and truth! Whoa, we will have finally arrived, because we KNOW that ain't a happening down here on this earth! :( Sure, we get tastes and glimpses here... but there we will have it all!

yes that is true but first God is going to get rid of all opposers at the war of God almighty so that is why he tells us to seek him before that day.
Before [the] statute gives birth to [anything], [before the] day has passed by just like chaff, before there comes upon YOU people the burning anger of Jehovah, before there comes upon YOU the day of Jehovah’s anger, seek Jehovah, all YOU meek ones of the earth, who have practiced His own judicial decision. Seek righteousness, seek meekness. Probably YOU may be concealed in the day of Jehovah’s anger. (Zepheniah 2;2-3)

(Psalm 37:11) But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

Ps. 37:29: "The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it."

Rev. 11:18: "The nations became wrathful, and your own [Jehovah’s] wrath came, and the appointed time . . . to bring to ruin those ruining the earth."

Rom. 10:13: "Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved."

Ps. 37:34: "Hope in Jehovah and keep his way, and he will exalt you to take possession of the earth. When the wicked ones are cut off, you will see it."

Anytime someone starts a post with "yes that is true but...", it just makes you want to cringe.

The Kingodom is a spiritual one... not a physical one. So must the new heaven and new earth must be spiritual, or as one NT writer calls it "incorruptible". The wars we fight are spiritual ones and people are NEVER the ones we are fighting. Instead we fight thoughts and attitudes, hate and intolerance. Yes, we have a hard time understanding that, but our focus needs to stay on the spiritual battle and not on the physical aspect of it all.

    Heaven is being with God.

    Hell is not.

There are no words that can express the joys of heaven or the pain of hell. Anything we read about them therefore is pure allegory.

3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
All the promises of God, especially including His promise to return and complete His great work of redemption, will be fulfilled, though it seems to us to be long delayed (2 Peter 3:4). The old cosmos will have been dissolved, its material elements having been converted temporarily into energy (light, heat, sound, etc.) but will then be made over again as a "new" (Greek kainos, meaning "fresh" rather than "young in age") cosmos, with all the age-long effects of sin and the curse forever removed (with the one exception of the lake of fire and its inhabitants--see note on Revelation 20:10).
The new heavens and new earth will no longer harbor any remnants of sin and its effects, so will "remain" forever (Isaiah 65:17; 66:22; Revelation 21:1-5).:)

He has founded the earth upon its established places; It will not be made to totter to time indefinite, or forever(psalm 104; 5) when the bible tells us there will be a new earth it does not mean the litaral earth will be destroyed . but it is a new earthly society of people on it that will make up the new earth compare these verses(psalm 78;69) (psalm119;90)According to the Scriptures, the earth, with humans to inhabit it, will remain forever.—Isa. 45:18.
In the Bible, "earth" does not always refer to our globe. For instance, Psalm 96:1 says literally: ‘Sing to Jehovah, all the earth.’ We know that our planet—the terra firma and the vast oceans—cannot sing. People sing. Yes, Psalm 96:1 is referring to the people on the earth

2Peter 3 verses 5 and 6, Peter writes about the Flood of Noah’s day, the Deluge that ended the wicked world back then. In verse 7, Peter mentions that "the heavens and the earth that are now," both the rulerships and the masses of people, are reserved for "the day of judgment and of destruction of the ungodly men." This confirms that the phrase "the heavens and the earth that are now" refers, not to the material universe, but to humans and their rulerships

yes the earth is a mess that is why God is going to bring to ruin those ruining the earth
But the nations became wrathful, and your own wrath came, and the appointed time for the dead to be judged, and to give [their] reward to your slaves the prophets and to the holy ones and to those fearing your name, the small and the great, and to bring to ruin those ruining the earth.(revelation 11; 18)

    To confirm,
The first commandment given to men was to "have dominion over and subdue" the earth (Genesis 1:26-28), acting as God's stewards for the good of mankind and the glory of God; but instead, men have all but destroyed the earth with wars and greed. This dominion mandate is still in effect, and God's judgment awaits the destroyers of the earth.:)

I don't want to speak for may, but being a JW, I believe may would be using the New World Translation.

Now on to the topic, just before the verse in question comes this.

    2 Peter 3:10-12

Note it says the heavens will be dissolved and the elements will melt. To me this implies that the physical universe (the heavens and the earth) will be gone, to be replaced by? I don't know, but I am pretty sure it will be better than the one we are in now :D

Edit: I changed a typo in my first sentence.

Isaiah 65:17-25 17 "Pay close attention now: I'm creating new heavens and a new earth. All the earlier troubles, chaos, and pain are things of the past, to be forgotten. 18 Look ahead with joy. Anticipate what I'm creating: I'll create Jerusalem as sheer joy, create my people as pure delight. 19 I'll take joy in Jerusalem, take delight in my people: No more sounds of weeping in the city, no cries of anguish; 20 No more babies dying in the cradle, or old people who don't enjoy a full lifetime; One-hundredth birthdays will be considered normal - anything less will seem like a cheat. 21 They'll build houses and move in. They'll plant fields and eat what they grow. 22 No more building a house that some outsider takes over, No more planting fields that some enemy confiscates, For my people will be as long-lived as trees, my chosen ones will have satisfaction in their work. 23 They won't work and have nothing come of it, they won't have children snatched out from under them. For they themselves are plantings blessed by God, with their children and grandchildren likewise God-blessed. 24 Before they call out, I'll answer. Before they've finished speaking, I'll have heard. 25 Wolf and lamb will graze the same meadow, lion and ox eat straw from the same trough, but snakes - they'll get a diet of dirt! Neither animal nor human will hurt or kill anywhere on my Holy Mountain," says God.

2 Peter 3:11 Since everything here today might well be gone tomorrow, do you see how essential it is to live a holy life? 12 Daily expect the Day of God, eager for its arrival. The galaxies will burn up and the elements melt down that day - 13 but we'll hardly notice. We'll be looking the other way, ready for the promised new heavens and the promised new earth, all landscaped with righteousness. 14 So, my dear friends, since this is what you have to look forward to, do your very best to be found living at your best, in purity and peace. 15 Interpret our Master's patient restraint for what it is: salvation. Our good brother Paul, who was given much wisdom in these matters, 16 refers to this in all his letters, and has written you essentially the same thing. Some things Paul writes are difficult to understand. Irresponsible people who don't know what they are talking about twist them every which way. They do it to the rest of the Scriptures, too, destroying themselves as they do it. 17 But you, friends, are well-warned. Be on guard lest you lose your footing and get swept off your feet by these lawless and loose-talking teachers.

I just want to make one clarification on my belief, I do not believe that heaven, as in pearly gates, will get destroyed, but the heavens, as in the stars/plantes/galaxies out there. It has been my experience that when the Bible says heavens, it refers to the "outer space".

Mr Emu brings up a good point. Heavens is usually refering to the celestial heavens, which would be different than the Kingdom of Heaven. I wonder of there is a translation here that clarifies a difference between the two. I think I will study on this.

If heaven is eternal, then it is NOW. I am already experiencing heaven here on earth.
