He should be held responsible for every crime committed with those guns.

I don’t understand this comment. No crimes were committed using those guns. He printed the guns, at $3 per gun, and then promptly turned them in receiving $50 each. Perhaps you misread the story.

Nothing is perfect. Given the horrible slaughter that is endemic in the US, we need to do something. And this problem needs to be addressed.

Sadly, the problem of 3D printing ghost guns is a serious problem beyond the buy back situation.

A policy of just “do something” is untenable.

So far, the "Just Do Nothing" policy appears to also be untenable...just sayin'

Do you honestly believe those guns are going to remain legit? He should he held responsible for any and all crimes committed with them.

In the 60s and 70s they were called zip guns.

You understand that he sold the guns to the police who will destroy them, right?

I don't trust people. How are we to know they were all turned in and that he hasn't been doing this before and after?
Now, of course it would extraordinarily difficult to prove the manufacturer of a ghost gun. But if someone is going to openly admit to doing it they need to be watched.
And I also trust the police less to have destroyed them all.

If that was the case, nothing in the history of mankind would have ever been accomplished. Change comes by doing which leads to a greater understanding of the problem. Rarely do people get things right the first time, there are always missteps but that leads to greater insights and, ultimately, knowing what direction to go in.

"It is better to do something than to do nothing while waiting to do everything."

"Americans will always do the right thing, only after they have tried everything else."

So what is your solution if buy-back programs are corrupt? Do nothing at all? Just curious!

How much a 3D printer cost? And materials?

You just admitted that gun control is impossible. Congratulations.

Well he seems to have printed them specifically to turn them in and make money. I think it is reasonable to assume he would turn all that he could in order to make $47 profit on each. But, assuming you are right, that would mean this program just helped to subsidize this criminal. So that would still be bad.

What difference would that make? If he already had them, the money was almost all profit. If he didn’t, the money he got would cover the cost of them and he would simply have profited in the form of a new paid for printer of the same value as the cash.

We could try doing “something right the first time” instead just “do something”.

False dichotomy. Instead either “just do something” or “just do nothing” we could try to find and do something that actually works.

Except it's not always feasible to know whether a course of action is the right or wrong one to take until it's implemented and the results reviewed. Even then, it may have failed in achieving the original goal but has value because it produced results in some other way or brought to light something previously overlooked.

Mankind has rarely gotten things right on the first go, it's taken multiple tries and different approaches.
