The human eye isn't even capable of viewing 1% of the spectrum of light. We're very nearly blind. Our hearing is pretty crappy compared to other animals, too.

One possibility that I have considered is that temperatures in the accretion disk might be high enough near the black hole's event horizon to initiate nuclear fusion. That would generate much more light and heat than frictional heating alone would. However, it may be that the physicists have already taken that into account.

I agree with this. We are freaking blind. We should be able to see and understand black holes without any problems.
