Was the apostle Paul sexist?

what a disgraceful thread, throwing slurs on st paul,st paul was not sexist but taught that women should be good wives, love their husbands, bear children, keep a good house, women are inferiour to men as even nature teaches that,,my interaction with non believing women is that they are worse than unbelieving men for resisting christ and obsessed with sexual gratification, hence the parable of the chaste wife who keeps her mouth shut and being as priceless as a pearl holds true
That's the definition of sexist

Do you believe that Paul's epistles in the Bible are inspired? I do. And if so, it is the Holy Spirit's will that what he wrote was written. If so, are you comfortable calling God a sexist?
Salam
So the question should be raised did God the almighty, the all powerful, omnipotent and omnipresent inspire a text that has claims to be sexism, and stories of raping, murdering, incest, sleeping with harlots, pornography, prophets having ******* children and commiting other sins? Does he inspire contradictions, mistranslations, diffent personalized interpretation and contradictory doctrines creating mass confusion in what claims to be the book from the one who creates order out of chaos and according to the scripture is not the author of confusion. I was never able to figure that out. It was a question I never go answered

yep guess im alone with my interpretations on the new testament, tis a pity
Oh not alone. Promise Keepers, I believe, have the same outlook towards women. It's just that that philosophical difference is not considered proper any longer under American law.

If Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit, how come he didn't have a more enlightened attitude towards women?

Surely, there is no scientific evidence that women are inferior to men in any spiritual regard. Why then does Paul seem to assume that they are incapable of teaching men?

dont ask me ask god,he created women as helpers not leaders...so its down to his judgement, paul was simply re-affirming it

Of course Paul was sexist.

Slavery was tolerated as well.

But God is neither bigoted or sexist.

Perhaps the lack of famous female leaders stems from people similar to you who don't believe women are capable of such?

But as NetDoc said, of course he was sexist. He was a man and a human being of the times. Jesus preached equality, but Paul was just a follower of Jesus, he wasn't Jesus himself.

Just because Paul was fettered by the beliefs of the times doesn't mean we should be.

Prima is right...

look how surprised everyone was with his interaction with the woman at the well? He did far more than give her the time of day... he treated her and her observartions with the same respect he would have for a Jewish man.

st paul was not sexist, many of his epistles outline his love for certain women, disciples of his,ok if you want female apostle leaders then let them take st pauls place which will mean starvation, cold, beatings, whippings, stonings, imprisonment and finally beheading,i dont think many women would want that

It appears to me that if God wanted to diefy his followers he would do so in the scriptures.

He never has stooped so low as to defend the FAULTS of any person (male or female) who has tried to follow him. In fact, he goes OVERBOARD to make sure we know about them. God was a spiritual "Jerry Springer" when it came to exposing his followers.

This is the MAIN difference between the real scriptures and all the other "wannabe" fairy tales out there. The Bible is INCREDIBLY harsh on it's heroes. Peter? Denied Jesus when he needed him most. Paul? Just ask Stephen what a nice guy he was. David? Murder and adultery were his halmarks.

The apostles were both sexist and bigoted. That doesn't mean WE have to be. Paul enjoins us to immitate him AS he immitates Christ. He wasn't perfect yet! Not by a long, long shot. Look at his dealings with Barnabas. He tells us to be free in one breath, and then he is busy adding on "requirements". Even Paul claimed to be the "worst of sinners" and that wasn't PAST TENSE.

So don't deify Paul, or any other apostle. You're gonna make them puke if you do!

Love...but not equality. That's sexism.

Women have endured as much - perhaps more - as men in regards to their faith. And they weren't held in as high esteem for it either. Perhaps you should brush up on your martyrs?

As a final nail in the coffin of the 'Christianity is sexist/Jesus was sexist' idea, guess who funded Jesus's preaching? That's right, women. Widows, to be exact.

Joan of Ark would probalby have opted for beheading over being burned to death. I could be wrong.
