You mean the narrators of the Bible, more specifically, the anonymous narrators of the Gospels of the New Testament, narrate that Jesus "gave up the ghost". However, the words of Jesus (peace be upon him) as quoted in the synoptic Gospels, inform us that the Sign of Jonas will be fulfilled in his case also, i.e., that like Jonas, he will survive being killed, and will be alive, like Jonas, for three days and nights, but instead of being alive in the belly of the whale, the only difference is that Jesus will be alive in the heart of the earth.
Hi, since I'm a noob here I should probably set out by disclosing my religious affiliation. I'm a Christian, as such I'm convinced that Jesus was crucified as maintained by the gospels (Mat 20:19, Mat 27:26, Mat 27:35, Mat 26:2, Mat 28:5, Mar 15:24, Mar 15:25 etc), and on the 3rd day he rose again as he himself said he would (Luke 24:7, Joh 2:19-21).
Oh yes the sign of Jonah a favorite Muslim retreat in their endeavor to challenge a well attested historical event. The crucifixion of Jesus the Christ. (Despite it being a favorite Muslim argument our Muslim friend here somehow misspells the name of the key character Jonah referring to him as "Jonas", maybe he was thinking about the Jonas brothers at the time). Lets have a closer look at how Jesus wanted us to understand the sign of Jonah as it related to Him shall we. I've pasted the relevant passage below:
But he (i.e. Jesus (the good guy)) replied to them (i.e. Pharisees (the bad guys)), "An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign. Yet no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was in the stomach of the sea creature for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
(Mat 12:39-40 ISV)
Lets note some things here:
1. Jesus says that the only Sign this generation of Jews (the generation of his day) will be given is the sign of Jonah.
2. How could the Jews be asking for signs didn't Jesus perform many other signs priorly; they really had some serious faith issues.
Okay since this was a sign to the Jews , the Jews had to witness the sign, because it was a sign "to them". If the sign Jesus was referring to was being alive in the tomb for three days and three nights then this would not be a sign to the Jews because no Jew witnessed how he was alive in the tomb (the Tomb was secured and sealed) Here's the relevant scripture:
and said, "Sir, we remember how that impostor said while he was still alive, 'After three days I will be raised.' Therefore, order the tomb to be secured until the third day, or his disciples may go and steal him and then tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' Then the last deception would be worse than the first one."
(Mat 27:63-64 ISV)
So, since the tomb was secured and was being closely guarded by Roman officers no Jew would enter the tomb and witness how Jesus was alive in the tomb. Therefore we must conclude that being alive in the tomb was not the sign of Jonah that Jesus said would be given to the Jews. What then was the sign of Jonah? Well Jonah's ordeal in the sea creature's stomach entailed two parts the duration of his ordeal and the actual events that took place in the sea creature's stomach. Jesus clearly was referring to the duration, note the underlined portion of the verse:
"For just as Jonah was in the stomach of the sea creature for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights" Basically Jesus was telling the Jews that just as Jonah spent three days and three nights in the sea creature's stomach that is how long He'll remain in the tomb. He doesn't say anything about his state in the tomb, but there is clear evidence to suggest that he was DEAD in the tomb.
"Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise.
(Luk 24:7 KJV)" Jesus said he would rise on the third day, what would he rise from? "From the dead" this is the only way he could rise, he didn't rise to heaven on the third day because 8 days later he was still on earth (Joh 20:26-27) to further ground this point look at the next passage:
"And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. "
(Luk 23:46 KJV)
Jesus commended his spirit into the father' hands, his spirit/life/(life force)/soul left his body and he died , the spirit is what keep the body functional.
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
(Gen 2:7 KJV) Jesus died on the cross for all intends and purposes.
So the sign to the Jews was his resurrection that is his emergence from the tomb and his eventual ascension, this is the only thing the Jews could witness. "
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. "
(1Co 15:4-7 KJV)
Therefore it stands to reason that this was the sign of Jonah that Jesus alluded to, that he would spent three days and three nights in the tomb like Jonah did in the belly of the sea creature and that he would come out of it again just like Jonah came out of the sea creature. In summary the bible records Jesus died on the cross, and that he rose on the third day even as the angel of the Lord said
And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
(Mat 28:5-6 KJV)
further proof that Jesus died:
Mat 16:21 From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he would have to go to Jerusalem and suffer a great deal because of the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised.
He (Jesus) said, "The Son of Man must suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he must be killed, but on the third day he will be raised."
(Luk 9:22 ISV)
Here Jesus admits that he would be killed and rise on the third day.
Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
(Rev 5:12 KJV)
Jesus is the Lamb of God (Joh 1:29 KJV), that was slain for the forgiveness of sins.
In light of the above scriptural proofs to keep on arguing that Jesus didn't die according would be blatant arrogance and a bold denial of what has so firmly been established beyond any reasonable doubt in Scripture. thank you. Over to you.
