Kamala Harris faces diplomatic pitfalls in tackling migration from Central America

Harris plans to visit Mexico and Guatemala, although part of the problem is that some of the governments she might have to deal with (such as El Salvador and Honduras) are ruled by corrupt strongmen. The article indicates that large swaths of El Salvador are controlled by the drug cartels.

It seems the first step should be to end the War on Drugs, as this seems to be a major contributory factor. We should also examine our Central American policies in a historical context, emphasizing our long-term interference in the region and the consequences which still persist. The history of companies such as United Fruit should also be looked at.

I do agree with this approach overall. It's better than simply obsessing over the border itself, which is merely a symptom of the deeper problems affecting our neighbors to the south. It's good that we work directly with the governments involved, although we'll have to find ways of eliminating the rife corruption which is evident.

This seems to me one of the only courses of action to take. If their own countries, outside of the few, is legitimately impoverished, then doing what you can to stop the cartels' ability to receive high-level compensation for their product in the U.S. should be a pretty effective way to hit them. As it stands, they likely have unchecked infrastructure, because the money just keeps pouring in. You nip a large chunk of that profitability fast enough, such that their infrastructure eats away at their reserves fairly quickly, and you could put them in a compromising position. Perhaps there are some other avenues of pressure that more expert players know of that could be simultaneously employed such that much of the corruption becomes unsustainable during that as well. I don't know. Something big needs done, for sure. As awful as the main "bad" players are being to their own countrymen with all this, one would think unmasking to the public as well could garner support for a more drastic plan to be enacted.

Unfunny jokes don't become funnier when we repeat them ad nauseam.

What do you expect her to accomplish?

Me? I expect very little - this problem has gone on for many decades. The structural changes needed are not likely to be accomplished quickly or easily. And a wall is not a structural change because all that does is give coyotes an excuse to tunnel under or drop children over the wall.

It's because of all the bragging and boasting by Democrats over the years on how much better they can handle the situation including the inception of sanctuary cities and other accommodations for which illegals are attracted to that makes the issue what it is now.

Well it seems they can't put their money where their big mouths are.

There are already some steps that have been taken that should ameliorate the situation over time, such as reversing Trump's decision that stopped all aid and removed us from the consortium of other countries trying to help the struggling NTC. Guatemala is already helping out at their border, but this problem did not develop overnight and it will not be "solved" overnight.

That alone would ring a death knell for drug cartels.

If you can find a claim where someone asserted they'd solve the problem in two months, post it here.

The right has been and is doing everything it can to make sure the Democratic solution dies and is never implemented. Whose fault it is if the solution can't be tried because someone else refused to allow it?

I knew the Democrat adjenda as soon as 'sanctuary' cities were created by the left wing big mouths.

Because both sides being at fault tells nothing concrete. Not how you understand that there are 2 sides and what the faults are. In effect you are saying nothing useful.

Who are the both sides? What are their respective actions and how are those faults?

Try a simple answer to that since that is all you seem to understand.
    Republicans and Democrats.
Both sides probably agree on the main point but do not agree on how to accomplish the man objective and are not willing to compromise.
