There is always been a dispute about this verse and its meaning.

There is an odd thing that tafsirs have a hard time explaining, in that, God expresses his anger on those astray from the path in Quran while 1:7 splits between them with "nor".

Any easy fix I thought of right now, is, it means "who go astray" but return back to the path. Now of course, why would believers pray not to be that, if we already went astray and came back, sinned and stop sinning, doubted and then believed and became sure, or whatever.....

It maybe not referring to the "guide us", but "the path of those who you favored", meaning, they are neither of those who God's wrath is upon which includes the astray souls per other verses of Quran nor of those who ever went astray or go astray (potentially). This way the straight path is Ahlulbayt (a).

Imam Jaffar (a) in hadiths is said to have emphasized "those who you favored" are Ahlulbayt (a). So its not that the path of following them means we will never go astray, but that "nor of those who go astray" is a description of those who we need to be guided upon the straight path. We always be of those who once went astray if we did, but Ahlulbayt (a) never went astray.

This solves the issue.

In Surah Shura, where it emphasizes to love Ahlulbayt in 42:23 with the word Al-Qurba, we see it ends with another fact in the Surah.

While 1:7 says "the path of those who you favored", the ending of Surah Shura says:

"The path of God the one who belongs what is in the heavens and earth, alas, to God return the affairs"

So we see the path is God's from one perspective as well.

More will be said about the theme of "those who you favored" and contextualize it with respect to the rest of Quran.
