Vermont Senate committee votes unanimously to advance marriage equality bill

"The committee vote is the first step toward passage of the bill that would give same-sex couples the equal rights of heterosexual married couples. The full Senate will take up the bill and hold a first vote on it Monday afternoon. Should it pass, the bill would then go before the House."

Yesterday, the Vermont State Senate passed the bill by a vote of 26 to 4. The Vermont House is hearing testimony on it today.

The bill was expected to sail through the Senate, but the vote is expected to be closer in the House. The governor opposes marriage equality, but has not said whether he'll veto the bill if it passes.

The Devil's Advocate
The Vermont House of Reps just voted to OVERRIDE the governor's veto!! This is the first time that a state has recognized marriage equality rights via the legislature, as opposed to the court system. No one can make claims of "activists judges" now. This was the will of the people, as decided by democratic process. UNFLIPPINBELIEVABLY AWESOME!!

I'm going to have something with Green Mountain Gringo salsa and Vermont cheddar cheese for dinner tonight, followed by Ben and Jerry's ice cream for dessert. :D
