Very much so we can. Electricity easily proves we can see cause and effect, and know different values with things like Ohm's law. You flip a switch and close the circuit, it functions as electricity passes through. But quantum mechanics is showing us things never understood or realized before, such as that cause/effect is not entirely necessary.

Expansion like that of the universe more likely indicates an explosion. No one could possibly know if this was the "first" such expansion/explosion ever enacted. And I believe it would be naive to simply assume so.

I'm not flip-flopping. Quantum mechanics has taken much of what we thought we knew and turned it upside down and inside out. It doesn't change the fact the area of a square will still always be base x height, or that DNA is the building block of life, but it has strongly challenged a number of previously established ideas, such as Relativity which isn't neatly fitting with QM.

We can actually say much with certainty and know for fact, 100% of the time, what is and what will work and what is not and will not work. For certain, 9V batteries are crap - this is based on their design and theories behind electricity. For certain, the Earth revolves around the sun due to the known laws of physics regarding gravity. For certain, QM is challenging and defying many previously held ideas, such as conservation of energy.

Isn't that the point. We can't say many of the things we thought were true in regards to physical laws with certainty. Quantum mechanics have turned some of those things on their head.

M-theory seems to be the best bet currently, as it fits the most "neatly" with everything we see in the universe.
