In the news, Trump seeks to take Iran's oil, preventing Venezuela from getting it.
WSJ News Exclusive | U.S. Seeks to Seize Iranian Fuel Bound for Venezuela
    Excerpted.....
U.S. federal prosecutors filed suit late Wednesday to seize four tankers-worth of gasoline Iran is sailing to Venezuela, the latest salvo in the administration’s effort to stifle flows of goods and money helping to keep two of its top foes in power.

By filing a civil-forfeiture complaint, U.S. prosecutors aim to not only prevent delivery of the Iranian fuel to Venezuela, which began the journey last month, but also deprive Tehran of the revenues from the cargo and deter future shipments.

The action is the latest in a series of moves the U.S. has taken against Iran and its ally Venezuela, as part of a broad operation to pressure the governments in Tehran and Caracas to meet U.S. demands.

Of course, making & maintaining Iran & Venezuela as enemies
invites their attacking our interests. Will they put a bounty on
Ameristanians? If so, we will be surprised, outraged, & demanding
a violent response (even by our liberal friends on RF).

    Insanity
    Definition....
    1) Doing the same thing over & over, & expecting a different result each time.
    2) Doing something with obvious consequences, & being surprised at the consequences.

Smells like Big Oil is pulling the strings again. For Trump it's another distraction.
I found yesterdays distraction quite interesting. "We intercepted a shipment of products from China that may have been manufactured with child labor."

Notice there isn't confirmation? But that doesn't matter to RW swindlers.
The political strategy here (propaganda) is to teach the audience that Communism = Child Slave Labor.
"If you elect Democrats, expect your children to be forced into labor camps" (how the audience interprets it....by design)

I don't quite understand how going to law helps here - even though I realise it is an American reflex in almost any situation.;)

If these ships are in international waters, I should have thought it would be an act of piracy to intercept them. Unilaterally imposed sanctions by the US government have no legal force on the high seas, surely?

P.S. But perhaps they all know that and this is an administration distraction, to look tough and get something into the headlines that stops Trump looking like a rabbit in the headlights, now that the virus, George Floyd and the Russian bounty stories have got him on the defensive.

I'm somewhat surprised we haven't invaded either country yet under Trump. GOP hawks are itching for both.

"Law" is a pretense in this case.

We should teach our children how to spot a few of the most commonly used fallacy arguments. Perhaps: false dilemma, strawman, ad hominem?

So the bolded sentence above is a...

false dilemma! bingo! you get a point!

I would say that thoughtful moderates on both sides of the conservative / liberal spectrum would not be surprised at retaliation. As the elected spokesperson for Thoughtful Moderates™, I can tell you that we find much of the U.S.'s foreign policy to be reprehensible.

That's how propaganda works. That's what these RW think tanks sit around doing. Obviously I don't agree with the sentiment.

    Says Bolton.
One of the few things that Trump did right was to keep his promise of no more wars. (Though he couldn't touch the military-industrial complexes war machine. No reduction of troops and the CIA is still doing its thing of toppling unwanted left-leaning administrations in Latin America.)
And the worst thing is that Biden wouldn't even give lip service to more peace. The US will remain the worlds bully for quite some time.

Personally, I'm not so sure I like the idea of Iran and Venezuela buddying up, considering they're both human rights violators, who oppose democracy, equality, freedom, civil rights, the common good, etc.

I'm willing to turn a blind eye toward measures that might increase these governments capabilities toward military growth.

I'm no fan of their governments either.
But I oppose our thuggish efforts to attack countries unnecessarily.
End the off & on hot & cold wars...let'm mind their own business.
We've already killed somewhere shy of a million Iranians in our
    proxy war (using Iraq).

I remember Iran-Contra and other interventionist acts. So Trump is following in Reagan's footsteps here.

To me this does not pass the smell test. Is our vital national interest at stake? Heck no. So we should just keep out of it.
