Matt Stoller has an interesting take on the organization and aims of the Wall Street Protests. He seems them as radically different than politics as usual and actually calls them a "church of dissent".

Matt Stoller: The Anti-Politics of #OccupyWallStreet « naked capitalism

I think the Protests may die down for awhile with winter coming, but they will be reborn again because the financial reforms the protesters are demanding will still be an issue.

What do you make of this movement?

“The day will come when our Republic will be an impossibility. It will be an impossibility because wealth will be concentrated in the hands of few. A Republic cannot stand upon bayonets, and when the day comes...we must rely upon the wisdom of the best elements in the country to readjust the laws of the nation to the changed conditions.”

Progress seems to have incremented the wrong way for th epast 30 years.

Probably longer then that. I blame it largely on the experiences of the Second World War that seemed to leave a massive scar on the human psyche. We have seen various Far Left parties in the Western Hemisphere withdraw and sometimes even outright leave Socialist style politics though it saw a resurgence in the 60s and 70s it once again petered out when the Old Guard once again just threw in the towel. OWS highlighted some good points but it lacked any real direction and in certain cities just turned into an excuse to create Hoovervilles instead of making points.
