Understanding Sufi tariqa

TARIQA
Tariqa is an Arabic term for the spiritual path, especially in the sense of a method of spiritual practice, often embodied in a social organization and tradition known as a Sufi order.

Tariqa has the etymological sense of way or path, and along with its near twin, tariq, it is used as a generic term for the way or path to God in the mystical writings of the Sufis. Despite the existence of numerous different traditions of Sufi practice and organization, it is common for Sufi teachers to point out that there is only one spiritual path that encompasses all of these different variations. At the same time, it is frequently asserted that there are as many paths to God as there are human souls. It is difficult to translate this kind of spiritual ideal into any definitive enumeration of Sufi orders as sociological entities.

I became a disciple of Shaykh Dr. Muhammad bin Yahya Ninowy, who has authorizations in several tariqas but is Shadhili in method, about 3 and a half years ago. It’s been amazing having the pledge to our beloved prophet (peace be upon him and his beautiful family) through a living breathing master but even Shaykh Ninowy is emphatic about doing the work and not expecting the pledge or the affiliation to work wonders in itself. And perhaps it’s through this connection that my iman has crystallized as much as it has (though not perfect). Still, we don’t need to enter a tariqa for these things. If He wills, we are all upon the tariqa of God’s beloved (peace Tutuapp 9Apps Showbox be upon him and his family) by our shahada. And God knows best.

Having a teacher/Shaykh near or in contact with the murid is very important, without the guidance of one who walked the path before is difficult, but one may not stay in the tariqa for all time :)
