The UN and NATO are helpless to do anything about ISIS and return the refugees to their homes, what good are they? Their whole basis for their existence was to end wars, the opposite has happened, and since their creation there has been nothing but wars.

We should have given the UN more teeth, huh?

NATO is an aggressive military body to justify proxy wars and the UN is a pipedream application of imperialism to attain a perceived objective.

    You want to end war?
    Kick out the imperialists.

@Sartre I quite like the UN actually, although NATO not so much.

No, it should be disbanded. The best way to peace is when nobody is ready for war.

I think the UN has hawkish tendencies which interfere with what the people of a country want their leaders to be doing.
I see the good intention in a lot of what they do, but it's not a good organ of power to have deployed.

Give the video a watch. Despite what you see on the news, we are living in a era of global peace. The UN and NATO can't stop all wars, and a third world war remains a remote possibility, but overall we are doing very well.

Not true. We're living in the most peaceful period of human history; there are fewer, smaller wars now than at any point before us. The U.N. is a contributing factor. It's far from perfect and has plenty of problems but it's still doing good. The fact that it's now doing what it was proclaimed to be for (restraining unilateral actions that violate nations' sovereignty) as opposed to being a vehicle for American power-projection shows that it still has a part to play in future.

As for NATO, this is the price America pays for being a successful, power-projecting superpower. Leave/disband NATO and you give up the whole premise for the " 'MURICA!!" attitude.

It seems to me between the UN and NATO, it's like trying to catch all the fish in a catch and release pond.

The world is experiencing an unprecedented level of peace and conflict is at an all-time low. What are you possibly talking about?

    ....

Are you just historically illiterate? The world is experiencing an age of peace that has never been seen before. Even the Pax Romana would be considered a violent, un-ending struggle compared to today. Open your goddamn eyes.

The United Nations is a reactionary institution lead by imperialists.

The UN prepared to attack the democratic liberation forces of Rowanda and was involved in imperialist actions which killed masses in the Korean War.

It's a tool of the capitalists to protect the current nations.

Tool of the communists since the UN is a move towards big government and regulations on top of regulations, the enemy of free market capitalism. If it was a tool of the capitalists they would have auctioned off Iraqi oil fields, or pump enough to pay for the cost of war.

The UN doesn't own Iraq's oil fields. And it was America and the UK that invaded Iraq. Not the UN.

My understanding is the UN rules prohibited them from taking Iraq oil, which would just make sense considering the cost of war tacked on to America's national debt. The taxpayers get the bill and who knows who gets the oil.

To be fair, the costs of the Iraq war could quite easily have been avoided.

Probably, if whoever is benefiting was not benefiting. Like if there were no regulations forbidding America from covering it's costs in Iraq oil or Afghan opium. There would be no incentive for someone to use American military as a free police force for their business interests. Because i'm guessing the cost of war outweighs those profits.

    I'm not sure I follow.

If America could recoup public money from Iraq's resources their would have been no incentive for war?

    Is that it?

    Big government=/=communism

There is not a single remaining communist superpower. Don't kid yourself.

The only remotely communist countries (Cuba and the DPRK) have not been treated well by the UN.

It is the tool of an aristocracy keeping capitalism in check.
