Twelvers, are Ahlulbayt the same rank?

Salam

I'm not sure any Twelvers left that post. But since this is debated between Akhbaris and Usoolis, I couldn't just post in it the Shiite section.

I'm going to be making the case that Mohammad, Ali, Fatima and the Imams from their offspring are all equal rank.

I will phase this in 3 Steps:

(1) Proof in hadiths.
(2) Proof in Quran.
(3) Proof in philosophy as to why (reasoning why God would do this).

Salam

The first proof in hadiths, I want to show for this, is a Salwat teaching Salawat on each member of Ahlulbayt (a) by Imam Hassan Al-Askari (a).

The Salawat is found here: Invoking blessings on infalliables (duas.org)

Some clips:

O Allah, as You have made him the core of Your words and revelations,

wa kh¡zina `ilmika

the hoarder of Your knowledge,

wa lis¡na tawhidika

the spokesman of the profession of Your Oneness,

wa waliyya amrika

the authorized to undertake Your mission,

wa mustahfa¨a dinika

and the keeper of Your religion,

fa¥alli `alayhi

so also (please) send blessings upon him

af¤ala m¡ ¥allayta `al¡ ahadin

with the most excellent blessings that You have ever sent upon any

min a¥fiy¡'ika wa hujajika

of Your elite people and arguments.

innaka hamidun majidun

Verily, You are full of praise, full or glory.

Similarly, we find:

O Allah, as You have made him the core of Your words and revelations,

wa kh¡zina `ilmika

the hoarder of Your knowledge,

wa lis¡na tawhidika

the spokesman of the profession of Your Oneness,

wa waliyya amrika

the authorized to undertake Your mission,

wa mustahfa¨a dinika

and the keeper of Your religion,

fa¥alli `alayhi

so also (please) send blessings upon him

with the most excellent blessings that You have ever sent upon any

of Your elite people and arguments.

innaka hamidun majidun

Verily, You are full of praise, full or glory.

And similarly:

O Allah, (please) send blessings upon `Ali the son of Muhammad,

wa¥iyyi al-aw¥iy¡'i

the successor of the Successors,

wa im¡mi al-atqiy¡'i

the leader of the pious,

wa khalafi a'immati alddini

the descendant of the leaders of the religion,

walhujjati `al¡ alkhal¡'iqi ajma`ina

and the argument against all of the creatures.

all¡humma kam¡ ja`altahu nuran yasta¤i'u bihi almu'minuna

O Allah, as You have made him the source of light from which the believers derive light,

fabashshara biljazili min thaw¡bika

and so he conveyed the good tidings of Your abundant reward,

wa andhara bil-alimi min `iq¡bika

warned against Your painful punishment,

wa hadhdhara ba'saka

notified against Your prowess,

wa dhakkara bi'¡y¡tika

reminded of Your sings,

wa ahalla hal¡laka

rendered legal that which You have deemed legal,

wa harrama har¡maka

rendered illegal that which You have deemed illegal,

wa bayyana shar¡'i`aka wa far¡'i¤aka

explained Your laws and the duties towards You,

wa ha¤¤a `al¡ `ib¡datika

encouraged on servitude to You,

wa amara bi§¡`atika

enjoined obedience to You,

wa nah¡ `an ma`¥iyatika

and forbade disobedience to You,

fa¥alli `alayhi

so also (please) bless him

af¤ala m¡ ¥allayta `al¡ ahadin

with the most favorite blessings that You have ever bestowed

min awliy¡'ika wa dhurriyyati anbiy¡'ika

upon any of Your intimate servants and descendants of Your Prophets.

y¡ il¡ha al`¡lamina

O God of the Worlds!

We see all Imams (a) are blessed with the utmost blessings.

So this a proof they are all same rank and ascend together.

There is this sermon from Imam Ali (a):

https://hubeali.com/khutbat/The Sermon of Recognition of Noor.pdf

In it is found Muhamad (s) and Ali (a) were one light before, and also the line "the first of us is Muhamad, the middle of us is Muhamad, the last of us is Muhamad, and in fact, we are all Muhamad" is found therein.

It's also emphasized not to find distinction between any of Ahlulbayt (a) but their mystery is one, their sign is one, their light is one.

There is this hadith which is a commentary on a verse:

Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn Hassa’n from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Ammar ibn Marwan from Munakhkhal from Jabir from abu Ja‘far (a.s.) who has said the following about the words of Allah. So whenever a Mohamad came to you with what you don't desire by the Authority and Relationship of Ali so you became Arrogant so a portion of the family of Mohammad you denied and a portion you killed.

My comment: This interpretation brings relevance of what happened to children of Israel and their Messengers with our nation. But we see Imam Mohammad Al-Baqir (a) emphasizes we are not just given Messengers (family of Mohammad) but they Mohammad, each of them a Mohammad... I will clarify this more later when bringing proof through Quran, but the name means praised to the extent that it's fully praised, and this is why Ahmad (most praised) is implied by the name. Together, they interpret each other, he is Ahmad (most praised) to the extent of lacking no praise in any station, and he is praised fully to the extent he is utmost praised.

Imam Mohammad Al-Baqir (a) is showing all of Ahlulbayt (a) are this, so they aren't just ordinary Messengers, they are rejecting Mohammad reality, and people of utmost praise and rank.

What they hate is the reality of Welayat Ali (a), and this Mastery was hated in the past as well, and all Prophets (A) are to be obeyed and seen as true authorities, kings, and masters.

the hadith is in Al-Kafi, chapter 108, hadith 31.

There is this long sermon of Imam Ali (a):

Imam-Ali-Sermon-Wasila-Intercession (hubeali.com)

We see Ali (a) says he is the greatest truthful (as due many Sunni hadiths say as well) and also that he is the reminder, the Quran, and light of God.

As for the translation "and it's below his rank", it can be translated, "and it's other then his station/rank", meaning Ali (a) and Imams (a), each one of them, though same rank, have a different station with respect to how they connect people to God in the next world. They all play a role in how they connect and distribute blessings of God just as they do now according to hadiths. I've shown a prayer to God asking a certain role by each of them for example in helping us obey God and other things.

Imam Ali (a) was trying to say, all of them have a known station with God and all of them are needed, Mohammad (s) though highest of creation like them, all of Ahlulbayt (a) play a role in the next as intercessors and connectors to God that differ from one another.

The sermon would contradict itself since in much of it, he is saying he is given the highest rank as well like being "Sidiqal Al-Akbar" and the "great tiding".

There is probably so many hadiths about "The great tiding" being Ali (a) but in Quran, it primarily is Mohammad (s), and so we see again, they united in this regard.

I will show many hadiths about great tiding, even though impossible to show them all for me, since there is many hadiths in this regard I have not read.

In al-kafi, Sadiq (a) says concerning the verse, the great tiding is the Walayah and from Baqir (a) was asked about the interpretation of the "about what they ask about", it is The Commander of the believers (a), The command of believers (a) use to say God has no sign greater then me and no tiding great then me.

From Al-Qummi from Reda (a) was asked about it, he said "The Command of the believers (a) said "There is no tiding greater then me and there is no sign greater then me, and God displayed my superiority upon the past nations on the various tongues, but they did not admit my superiority."

And from Al-Ayoon from him from forefathers, that Imam Hussain (a) said, the Messenger of God (s) said to Ali (a) "O Ali you are God's proof and you are God's door, and you are the way to God and you are the great tiding and you are the straight path and you are the highest likeness"

And in Kafi in the Khutba of Al-Waseela (I showed this last post) the commander of the believers (a) "I am the great tiding and in little you will come to know what you are promised"

These are Sunni hadiths and Shiite hadiths (found in both sources):

Abu Abdillah Ahmad bin Mohammad bin Al-Hasan bin Ayyoub Al-Hafez narrated from Abu Ali Ahmad bin Mohammad bin Jaafar Al-Souli, from Mohammad bin Husain, from Hafs bin Omar, from Abu Muawiya, from Aamash, from Abu Wael, from Abdullah son of Omar, who said: The Messenger of Allah said: “Jibraeel told me that Ali is the best human being. Those who deny this are disbelievers.”

Abu Abdillah Husain bin Mohammad bin Is’haaq bin Abi Khattab Al-Suoti narrated from Ismail bin Ali Al-De’beli, from his father, from Ali bin Musa Al-Redha (8th Imam), from his father, from Jaafar bin Mohammad, from his father (5th Imam), from Ali bin Husain, from his father , who said: The Messenger of Allah said to Ali bin Abi Taleb , “O Ali you are the best human being. Those who doubt this are disbelievers.

Al-Sharif Al-Naqib Abu Mohammad Al-Hasan bin Mohammad Al-Alawy Al-Hussayni narrated from Mohammad bin Zakariyya, from Abbas bin Bakkar, from Abu Bakr Al-Hozali, from ‘Ikrama, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah said to Abdul Rahman bin Awf: O Abdul Rahman! You people are my companions, but Ali bin Abi Taleb is from me and I am from him. So those who compare him to anyone are unjust to me. Those who are unjust to me, hurt me. Allah’s curse is on those who hurt me. O Abdul Rahman! Allah sent His book to me and ordered me to teach it to all people, except Ali bin Abi Taleb, because he does not need to be taught. Allah made Ali’s…eloquence as my eloquence, and Ali’s knowledge as my knowledge. If patience was a person, it would be Ali bin Abi Taleb; and if moral excellence was a person it would be Hasan; and if modesty was a person it would be Husain; and if everything that is good were to be a person it would be Fatema, and she is even better than that. The origin of my daughter, Fatema, is greater than any other inhabitant on earth, as is her honour and her generosity.

Ghayatol Maram P512 H20. Khawarezmi in Maqtal Al-Husain V1 P60. Faraed Al-Semtayn V2 P68 H392.

We can see in the last hadith, he equates Ali (a) with his level and then says no person is greater then Fatima (a). This shows again they are equal level.

Abul Qassem Abdullah bin Mohammad bin Is’haaq bin Sulaymaan bin Hananah Al-Bazzaz narrated from Al-Baghawi Abdullah bin Mohammad, from Hasan bin Arafah, from Zajr bin Harun, from Jamil bin Al-Taweel, from Anas, from Ayesha, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say that Ali is the best human being. Those who deny this are disbelievers.” So people asked her, “Why did you go to war with him?” Ayesha replied, “I did not do this out of my own inclination. It was Talha and Zubair who made me fight him.”

Ahmad bin Jarrah narrated from Abdil Aziz bin Yahya Al-Joloudi, from Mohammad bin Zakariyya, from Abdullah bin Muslim, from Al-Mofaz’al bin Saleh, from Jabir bin Yazid, from Zathan, from Salaman and Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah said: On the night of Me’raaj, I approached my Lord and I “was at a distance of two bows or nearer still” (53:9). He spoke to me between the two AQEEQ (agate) mountains and said: O Ahmad! I created you and Ali from My own light, and I created these two mountains from the light of Ali’s face. I swear by My Magnificence that I have created these two mountains to be a sign that is used to identify the believers. And I swore on Myself that I make it Haram to send to Hell those who wear the Aqeeq ring on their hands and follow Ali bin Abi Taleb

Mohammad bin Abdillah bin Ubadillah bin Bohloul Al-Mawali narrated from Mohammad bin Hasan, from Isa bin Mihran, from Ubaidullah bin Musa, from Khalid bin Tahman Al-Khaffaf, from Saad bin Jonada Al-Awfi, from Zaid bin Arqam, from Abi Saeed Al-Khodri, who said: The Messenger of Allah said, “Ali bin Abi Taleb is the Master of Arabs.” 112 So the people asked the Prophet , “Are you not the Master of Arabs?” The Prophet replied: I am the Master of human beings and Ali is the Master of Arabs. Allah loves those who love Ali and follow him, and (Allah) guides them to the right path. Allah makes those who hate Ali and those who fight him deaf and blind. Ali’s HAQQ is my HAQQ, and following him is following me, except that there is no prophet after me. Those who abandon him abandon me, and those who abandon me abandon Allah How is it possible for anyone to be guided to Paradise except through this door? Ali is the best human being. Those who deny this are disbelievers.

Mohammad bin Abdillah bin Ubaidillah bin Morrah narrated from Abdullah bin Mohammad AlBaghawi, from Ali bin Jaad, from Ahmad bin Wahab bin Mansour, from Abu Qobaisa Shuraih bin Mohammad Al-Anbari, from Nafi’, from Abdullah bin Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, who said: The Messenger of Allah said to Ali bin Abi Taleb : O Ali! Comment: We see later Imams are given titles like most generous, most knowledgeable... this again because they are all the best and equal rank,

Nuh bin Ahmad bin Ayman narrated from Ibrahim bin Ahmad bin Abi Hasin, from his grandfather, from Yahya bin Abdil Hamid, from Qays bin Rabee’, from Sulaymaan Al-Aamash, from Jaafar bin Mohammad (Imam Al-Sadiq) , from his father, from Ali bin Husain , from his father , from the Commander of the Believers , who said The Messenger of Allah told me: O Ali, you are the Commander of the Believers and the Imam of the pious. O Ali, you are the master of all of the successors of the prophets. You inherit all of the prophets’ knowledge and you are the best of SEDDIQIN (the truthful ones) and the best of those who believed in Allah first. O Ali, you are the husband of the woman who is the Master of All of the Worlds’ Women, and you are the successor of the best of the prophets. O Ali, you are the Master of the Believers. O Ali, you are the evidence that proves Allah’s existence after me on all people. Those who follow you will earn Paradise, and those who are against you deserve Hell. O Ali, I swear to Allah, who sent me as a Prophet and who chose me from among all of His creatures, if any slave worships Allah for a thousand years, Allah will not accept it unless he believes in your Wilayat and the Wilayat of your sons.13 Furthermore, your Wilayat will not be accepted unless it is accompanied with the hate of your enemies and the enemies of your sons.14 This is what Angel Jibraeel has told me. Let them choose to be believers or KAFERS (disbelievers).1

They are found (almost all so far) in Shiite sources as well. So this can be used as evidence that they are same rank. I will post more hadiths, but not all of them on this theme, and then move on to showing proof through Quran, then reason.

Hasan bin Hamza bin Abdillah narrated from Ahmad bin Al-Hasan Al-Khashab, from Ayyoub bin Nuh, from Abbas, from Amr bin Aban, from Aban bin Taghlab, from ‘Ikrama, from Ibn Abbas, who said: After returning from the farewell pilgrimage, the Messenger of Allah said: O people! Jibraeel, the Honest Spirit, came to me from Allah, the Magnificent, and said, “O Mohammad, Allah says that he misses seeing you. So prepare a good will and finish what you have to do.” O people! My time has come (to an end) and I can see us leaving one another. So if your bodies have left me, do not allow your souls to do the same. O people! Allah has never created an immortal prophet, and I am not immortal. Allah has said in this verse in the Qur'an, “We have not granted to any man before you eternal life. What! If you die, will they live for ever? Every soul shall taste of death” (21:34-35). Understand that my Lord has ordered me to leave a will for you. Understand that my Lord has ordered me to show you to the ark of rescue and the door of sustenance. Those of you who want to survive after me and be safe from the destroying seductions should hold firmly to the Wilayat of Ali bin Abi Taleb. He is the most truthful and the best separator of right from wrong. He is the Imam of every Muslim after me. Those who love him and follow him will be next to me by the Pool of Kawthar on the Day of Judgement. I will see those who disobey him on the Day of Judgement, but they will not see me. They will be pulled towards others who will take them deep into Hell. Then the Prophet said, “O people! I have given you the best advice but you do not like the advisors. I say this and I seek forgiveness for myself and for you.” Then he held Ali’s head and kissed his forehead. Then the Prophet said to Ali , “O Ali, your virtues cannot be counted. I swear to Allah, who created the seeds and created people, if all creatures would concede to loving you and understanding your true status, Allah would not have created Hell.”

Ziyarat Jaffar As-Sadiq (a), we say to him "Peace be upon you highest likeness", so we see Imam Jaffar (a) is the highest likeness, and we say the same to all of Ahlulbayt (a) in Ziyarat jamial-Kabeer.
