Im pretty sure this is how Trump's response actually reads:
They did bad thing, they hurt me feeling. Me sue them long time.
Thinking he said anything else is fake news and they're bad people for distorting the truth.

It will be up to the courts to decide, it will all come out in the wash eventually.

The only appropriate response is for the courts to tell Trump to suck it, grow up, and accept this thing we call the first amendment, quit embarrassing the country, and dismiss the case.

    .

It's just Trump's way of drawing attention away from the SC Democratic primary and back onto himself. He'll drop the suit as soon as he can get better attention elsewhere.

Really? Do you not think that media outlets should be held accountable for what they report especially when it comes to claiming the POTUS of any party conspired or colluded with a foreign government when they didn't. The Russia blame game has been going on for a while causing division and distrust in our institutions which undermines our democracy and is all domestic based, not foreign.
A certain well known media outlet recently settled with Nick Sandmann (Covington MAGA hat kid) over their blatantly false coverage of the confrontation. The story as we well know further agitated race relations for no reason and falsely cast Nick and the students as the cause.

The Democrats should be thanking him for diverting attention away from those disasters.

Civil action lawsuits are also a form of freedom. One doesn't take away from the other.

*Note what Trump is not doing -- Using the government in a fascist, dictatorial way by abusing his position as president... Rather, he's doing it independently like all citizens do.

For an opinion? No. That is a guaranteed right from the Constitution. Emperor Snowflake Trump just needs thicker skin.

Repeating that for effect. Trump is the thinnest skinned snowflake who melts down with no hesitation at any who dare to challenge him in any way.

Oh my god. He so and totally is. Any insult, he goes into defense mode. Anything is "less than," no or absolutely is not and in fact it's the biggest ever. His claim to a very high IQ? I'd put money on it that he started doing that after someone told him his isn't that high. But he should enjoy his small hands. They make his, what I assume is, micro-dick look bigger.

What do you think would happen if someone wrote an opinion piece in a major news outlet that Disney was run by pedophiles? Sure there is freedom of speech but I'm pretty sure some lawyers would be involved fairly quickly and the word libel used.

Trump isn't a snowflake. IMO, a snowflake whines about what is, whines because he can't change it and whines because he wants others to change it.
Like it or not(I don't care for Trump) but Trump is the most powerful person in the U.S.. Challenge him and he will call you out with his power that he is hungry with. He is the commander and chief of every American.
Wishing he fails is just as stupid as the repubs wishing Obama would fail.
My point is whether one half loves them or one half hates them, they still are/were the commander and chief. Wishing they fail(either Obama or Trump) just shows stupidity of party lovers.

How often are tabloids successfully sued? Honest question.

    Look up libel laws.

Now Trump, being a 'pubic figure' has to prove a great deal more than you or I would, in regard to this, but just as freedom of speech doesn't allow yelling 'fire' in a movie theater, or allow a university to support and promote campaigns to destroy private businesses by using clearly provable lies in order to do it, then the NYT (or any other newspaper) isn't allowed to publish, with malice and an intent to deceive, inaccurate information that is specifically intended to harm someone.

Offering one's opinion? THAT'S FREE SPEECH. Deliberatly using lies that one knows are lies in order to harm? That's not free speech. Now of course, if those lies turn out to be truth, the case goes right out the window, and Trump is left hanging.

But what if those statements by the NYT turn out to BE lies, and that the Times KNEW they were lies? Shoot, for that matter, what if they didn't know they were lies the first time they were published, but when they found out that those things WERE lies, kept publishing them and refusing to retract...or almost as bad, retracted on the last page in fine print, and continued to make the claim on the front page?

What the NYT said about Trump went far beyond criticism and opinion. They flat out accused him of committing very serious crimes, and did so in a way as to insinuate that those acts are proven true; not to be argued with. No Trial, no evidence....just conviction. The only trial Trump is going to get over these things is a civil libel lawsuit.....and I think he's pretty darned brave to try it. Given the state of the courts right now, even with a compete absence of evidence to prove that what the NYT was correct, what are the odds that the courts would acknowledge such a basic thing as 'innocent until proven guilty?"

I mean, really....as careful as the papers are to put 'alleged' in front of the crime for anybody who hasn't been convicted of something, you'd think that the NYT would at least do THAT....but nope.

    It will be interesting.

Slander and defamation of character out weigh freedom of speech and have to be answered for. Too many seem not to realize that.

Just an honest question. Actually, I think newspapers have more protections under the law than tabloids do. I’m not a lawyer though.

We shall see soon enough what the courts say, I'm sure both sides will have highly paid lawyers.
